Since you love witch books so much, would you consider making a recommendation video on them, maybe? I love the idea of witch books but like you say, it's usually cheesy romances or epic fantasy novels where they tend to be side characters (which I also love). The one that's on my radar and which sounds dark and kind of like the film The Witch is Slewfoot by Brom. It's got stunning illustrations as well. Happy reading!

Gurrrrl! Can't find witch books without a romance element? Let me introduce you to my TBR 😂: 1. Slewfoot by Brom (that you already know). 2. The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson. 3. Witches-The Complete Collection by Daisuke Igarashi (graphic novel). 4. The Winter Witch by Paula Brackston (in case you miss the spooky season). 5. The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco (a trilogy, might have some romance but isn't the main focal point). Last but not least, one of my most FAVORITE books of all time -- Hex by Thomas Olde Heuvelt. The best premise ever. "A 17th century woman with sewn-shut eyes and mouth walks its streets...enters homes...watches its people when they sleep. They call her the Black Rock Witch. So accustomed to her presence, the townsfolk often forget what will happen if her eyes ever open. To protect themselves, the Black Spring elders use high-tech surveillance to quarantine the town. Frustrated with the lockdown, the town's teenagers decide to break the rules and go viral with the haunting. But no one foresees the dark nightmare that awaits them all..."

I hope you like the Marisha Pessl one and pick out more of her work! I borrowed Special Topics from the library years ago as an audiobook and loved the perspective and voice of our young female protagonist (included in my favorites). It's always good to see folks read that author.

I read Special Topics in Calamity Physics and the narrative structure is ~very~ similar to The Secret History, but set at a high school instead of a uni campus. Which can be a good or a bad thing depending on the perspective. For me, I read them too close apart, so it felt repetitive, but I'm sure in a different context, I would have liked Special Topics a lot more. Oh also, it spoiles the short story The Lottery by Shirley Jackson (there are A LOT of literary references in Special Topics), and I was bumped about it, but if you've already read that one, you're good ;)

Twenty years ago I had a brief experience with someone who died and my daughter did too on the same day and hadn't spoken. We have never since but keep open to the idea of life after death because it is astounding. No proof but it was amazing. Of course I don't tell many people because it sounds nuts and I am a doctor. Just don't cancel the idea because it is far fetched.

That's amazing though! I know several people who have had those kinds of experiences, so I'm always open to it

Great video! Love the scarf on your statue- ha! Already have my copy of The Marriage Portrait- can't wait to start it. I SO heart Maggie O'Farrell. I also bought Babel because I'm super into ANYthing with a Dark Academia vibes lately and I thought it looked great. I may even pick it next... Is this your first Mary Roach? I hope you enjoy her, can't wait to hear your thoughts. I've read 4 (?) of her books so far and really liked them all- though I haven't tried Spook yet.
