thanks for the info! I just bought a mobile home that has this stove as its primary heat. the flu was doing nothing at first - but it was unbelievably dirty. I cleaned it out good and the airflow works much better - it seems useable. The crappy combustor/wet toilet paper part (lol) is also broken in mine. I found pieces of it when I was vacuuming it out. I also do not really want to spend $450 to replace that! However I don't feel comfortable using the combustor the way it is. This stove is designed for you to (once you get the fire hot) to 1. close the bypass (top left back handle) and 2. lower the air flow/flu (bottom left lever) that's when the flow goes out through the bottom back before then rising to the top. If its done that way, in theory you can fill it up with wood and it should burn for 13 hours. I, however, am only burning with the bypass open - which means it just goes straight up the pipe. extremely inefficient. So I am curious, have you have been burning with the bypass open or closed? If you have been burning with it closed without any problems, then mabye I can get away with it too - seeing how both our stoves have broken wet toilet paper junk in back.

After about 15 minutes of burning it hot I shut the bypass and leave the flu fully open. I sometimes crack the ash pan drawer because it seems like it is starving for air for the first couple hours. The change in heat provided to the room is very noticeable. I have not had any problems yet but will make an update video if I do hopefully it not a video on how I burned my shop down. Hope this helps let me know if you have any other questions. If your combustion box broke in the Same way mine did I think it’s safe but that is my unprofessional opinion.

Thanks for the reply. And I'm also wondering, do you ever fill it with wood? I only do a few small logs at a time. I worry about runaway overheating where the gets literally red hot - it's never happened but I'm afraid if I put too much wood in I wouldn't be able to slow it down. (Although I suppose I could keep a bucket of sand nearby to quench it in emergency)

And bottom line is it's surrounded by cast iron - even if the flow pattern isn't exactly as designed

@@craigmahoney4482 I have filled it full of wood and felt safe doing it but I usually just stick around 3/4 full. In my case, I am just burning it while I am in the shop but If I was burning it overnight to keep my house warm I would load it full so I could get a good night's sleep. I think you would be safe to do that unless you are burning a high BTU wood like black locus. I know this may seem a little petty but the other benefit of not filling it full and keeping the flu open is that it seems to keep my glass mostly clean.

@@craigmahoney4482 I am glad you mentioned it being surrounded by cast-iron. I agree and that is why I think we are safe running it with the bypass shut. It may not be as efficient as having the complete combuster box but this is still way better than leaving the bypass open.

Sorry for the late reply. Not sure if it helps but I am still running the stove with the broken combustor and it works fine.
