After travelling by a nonstop train on the way to Madrid, I decided to take an AVE, that stops a few times in between, on the way back. So I chose the AVE 3093.
This train operates with a Renfe Class 103, also known as Velaro E, which was construed directly from the german ICE 3 ( Class 403/406) trains. Because this AVE even continues to Figueres-Vilafant, near the french border, from Barcelona, I booked the journey all the way to there, and changed then to the TGV to Paris. Between Madrid and Barcelona the train temporarily branches off twice from the high speed railway, in order to reach into the cities of Zaragoza and Lleida. Even Camp de Tarragona is a stop in between, which extends the travel time by 37 minutes compared to the nonstop trains.
The railway speed is, apart from the branch offs, 300 km/h until Barcelona. Then the speed is limited to 255 km/h until Girona and to 290 km/h from Girona to Figueres-Vilafant. But the AVE just went at 210 km/h maximum speed between Barcelona and Figueres.
