Very interesting. My parrot blue front Amazon has managed fatty liver disease and in listening to the various symptoms that can indicate liver problems I was surprised the doctor did not include feather changes; i.e. discoloration, or feathers growing in the wrong color, and also a greasy feel to the feathers.

Dr. Lamb explained that she listed the most common signs that would point to Liver disease as the most likely cause, so there are other signs she didn't list, that would point to several possible causes. Liver disease can cause feather changes, including color and texture, but there are a number of things that can also cause this, and feather changes generally do not show up until after a molt. By then, the bird would most likely have already exhibited other signs and be diagnosed already. I hope your Amazon is doing well.

@@lafebercompany-official3250 Thank you for your reply. My guy's improved a lot from his diagnosis 2 years ago of end stage FLD. Now the vet says he has managed FLD. His feather condition is much improved too. But he's on 3 medications for life and is prone to bacterial infections. Oh - he has heart disease as well. He's 36+ and hanging in though. Thanks again for your reply.

You might want to try him on our Senior Bird Nutri-Berries. They were developed by Dr. Susan Orosz and contain some wonderful natural herbs and supplements that could help support him. Our customers with debilitated birds who started on the Senior berries have only good things to say about how much their birds have improved. You can read more about them here: lafeber.com/pet-food/bird-food/senior-bird/?v=7516fd43adaa

My Quaker parrot has very high bile levels and is acting totally normal. My vet put her on Milk Thistle and will be starting investigation of the cause.

How to use the Milk Thistle? Can we add it to the water? how many days we should use it for both sick birds and healthy birds for prevention.

Hi - you need to consult with your Vet when you give your birds any type of medication, even alternative or herbal medicines. This is why amounts are not given in the talk.

I’m watching this because one of my lovebird is having kidney and liver issues and I don’t think his meds are helping because he seems to be getting worse.

This is something you would need to discuss with your Vet.

In order to do bloodwork on an Amazon parrot, do you have to sedate them?
@lafebercompany-official3250
8 ай бұрын
It depends on the Vet's preference. Traditionally, birds were never sedated for simple procedures. With advances in types of sedation, in some cases it can help with a bird that stresses easily. Keep in mind that this would be a case of something that calms the bird while keeping it conscious, not something that places the bird under anesthesia. There are risks with any type of sedation or anesthesia, but the risks tend to be higher with anesthesia. Any bird can have an adverse reaction to any drug, so this should be discussed with the Vet before agreeing to sedation.
