I moved to Atlanta from Charlotte, NC 10 years ago. I have a love hate relationship with Atlanta. I have been very fortunate to do very well financially here on my job. However the crime is no joke. Too many people with a fake it till you make it attitude. Some will do anything for a dollar. No neighborhood is excluded from crime. I live in Buckhead, in a high rise apt. Just 7 months ago 3 men were shot and killed in the apt next door to mine. I was asleep in the bedroom. A bullet came through my wall. Thank God I was not injured.

Lived in Atlanta recently for 2 years contract work Pros: a lot of trees if you Iike that, a beautiful Botanical Gardens, city looks pretty, some great food~ Not the popular celebrity restaurants. Cons: 1) crime everywhere, 2) so many homeless people downtown 3) arrogant people trying to act rich ~ yes, the fake it till you make it’s 4) horrible traffic 5) ridiculously high rent and high home prices for not that great a home. For a nicer less expensive home you will live in a different city not in Atlanta and drive in and that drive will take you hours. 6) smaller towns 1.5 hours from Atlanta you will see Confederate flags - not unusual. At all. 7) low pay for medical industry compared to most of the United States 8) very high prices for nail and hair salons 9) a lot of DL men. A lot. Ladies be very careful! 10) Scammers both women and men looking to take advantage of people ( read You!) Don’t be a target. 11) crime, crime, and yes, violent crime. I lived there on contact for 2 years quite a long time ago as well. The city has changed, if you look at it holistically it is for the worse. At this point, I do not recommend moving to Atlanta for the reasons listed above.

There are not many very good public school systems in metro Atlanta or Georgia period. When they leave the state for school they can't compete. East Cobb is great, it's going to cost you a little more but, it's worth it for the schools, lifestyle, little to no crime, access, just a great atmosphere, very clean and pleasant.
@laryanryan9170

Most of the good schools are on the North side or outside of the city but there are tons of good students who come from below average schools and they get scholarships to big colleges. It's not the schools, it's how they're raised.
@cocolyndon4604
6 ай бұрын
@@laryanryan9170 Yeah, they may get scholarships however, they come back because they can't compete. In GA certain student aren't really challenged, even some 4.0 students, they're just liked by teachers because they are more deciplined and may perform better than others, some high grades are given when they've not really earned them. Many students here in GA, stay and attend one of the many colleges here in GA. And yes schools are better on the north side. We moved here from OH, my sone was ahead of his class. My son started in East Cobb, then I moved to the South side. I had to leave the south side for sure, then I moved to Alpharetta on the North side where my son finished. Even having said this, there are some students who are really smart students and truly earn the grades. It's too bad that the parents are more concerned about their child's fashion rather than helping to develop successful students and educators who don't really care, they're just passing out grades. And outside the metro Atlanta area they are even less challenged.

I would warn people not to move here by themselves. The southern hospitality is lacking here as a whole. A lot of people here are pretentious and flaky so it is hard to make genuine friendships here. Like DC, Atlanta is clicky and big on networking and your social status does matter here. People only want to be bothered with you for what they can get out of you and how you can benefit them and/or their business. If they don’t think they can get any value out of you then they don’t want to be bothered with you. There are some nice/cool people here but it doesn’t necessarily turn into a friendship

The problem is with people who move often. They wont ever be satisfied with living in one place, like that Langston guy on KZitem who talks about not moving to Atlanta. I think the traffic is our number one problem but they're coming up with ways to alleviate traffic, hopefully they build more subway lines. Yes Atlanta has a subway system which expands over two counties as of 2024. I've been other cities and Atlanta is perfect to me as a black man in his 40s with a couple of skills under his belt. You need skills to live in big cities. I know nurses who can do hair and makeup.

I think you were spot on about your assessment of Atlanta I would also add that weekend Brunch is a big thing down in Atlanta. There are a lot of black owned brunch spots- and the restaurant experience here is a whole nother conversation… it gets super hot in the summer- we had 90+ degree weather since June. Winters are fairly mild. I would also say that the rent is crazy high- even living on the outskirts of Atlanta you could be paying anywhere from $1700-$2000 just for a 1 bedroom apartment, which doesn’t include utilities and you still have to worry about your car getting vandalized. And these are at the “Luxury apartments”. Atlanta is over crowded better yet “we full”! We don’t have the road space for all the people that are constantly moving down here hence the horrible traffic. You do better staying where you are or moving to Texas, the carolinas or Florida. I hear the cost of living in Texas and Carolinas is more affordable.

Atlanta is mega-center for drugs, gangs, sex trafficing, among many other illegal markets. Traffic congestion, over-priced housing and inadequate public transit comes to mind when one thinks of living in Atlanta. Long gone is the tradition of warm southern hospitality it once had. Go visit cities like San Francisco today and you'll see what Atlanta will be like in 10 years!

The safest area to live is Roswell (west side and parts of East away from 400 and Hulcombrige), Alpharetta, Milton, Suwannee, Bufford, Duluth, Cummings and other places further North. Dekalb outside of Dunwoody and parts of Chamble, Atlanta, Smyrna, Marietta, Clayton county and Powder Springs are no go zones for living.

I wouldn't want to live there either. I think Chicago is a bit hot in the summer, so I wouldn't like Atlanta summers. I've lived in Spartanburg, SC, which is similar to Atlanta and I always had to go swimming or up to the mountains for relief

There is no regional or mass public transportation in Atlanta or surrounding areas. Traffic is horrendous. And you had better have more than one car since you can't take public transportation. Also, If you want to buy a house, try to find property that doesn't have a Home Owners Association (HOA) which really owns your house while you pay the mortgage and taxes. You have to get permission from the HOA to do almost everything you might want to do on your property. Crime is rampant all over Atlanta and surrounding areas. I was born in Georgia and retired back to Atlanta 20 years ago, and it was the worst mistake in my life. I hate it, but stuck. Also the worst healthcare I have ever received in my life is here in Atlanta. I fly to Boston periodically for medical care. All that glitters is not gold. Do your research.

Atlanta has been good to me, but I do agree that some changes should be made. First there are not a lot of jobs in the Atlanta metro area compared to the amount of people living here. People are recycling jobs. Your getting a job that someone left, because it wasn't a good company. Then you realize it and leave too. Also, so people are getting mean here, due to the congestion and competitiveness at jobs. I've seen some jobs that keep posting the same job. The traffic is bad and has been for years, but now they want people to come in to work now instead of keeping the hybrid/remote option. Housing is increasing really high and rent as well. After while people will be leaving again if they don't make some changes here. I think Georgia needs to build up some of the other cities south of the perimeter or Augusta, Savannah, Albany, Macon with jobs, and housing. That will help with the congestion in the metro area. If you go to Texas most of the top cities have jobs, good restaurants and shopping areas the same as Dallas and Houston. This is a great place to get a start after college and the housing is some areas is still cheap for a 1st time home buyer.

@yoursuccess thank you for sharing your experience with us. Have you tried hotels or air bnb. If you ever come back for a visit try one of these options. There are some really nice hotels but they are more expensive and are in like mid town Atlanta or Smyrna near the Atlanta Battery. In my experience. But your right some of these motels can be concerning.

“I didn’t come here: I’m FROM here”! Atlanta is NOT perfect. BUT, it’s appears to be BETTER than where you came from. Cost of living: it’s far more reasonable to live in Atlanta than L.A., SAN FRANCISCO, MIAMI, NEW YORK, etc., I’m rarely insulted by folks taking issue with various quirks about living here; in my Rhett Butler voice) Delta is READY when YOU are!
