This hammered the last nail on the coffin of rev-matching for me. I can't rev-match without pulsing the front brake specifically under heavy braking and rapid downshifting. Whenever I forget to rev-match, it feels easier for the bike and for me but I was under the notion that I need to rev-match. Thanks for this one. Now, moving forward, I will only blip the throttle when I am clutchless downshifting but when approaching the corner under braking, "trail clutch" it is. More power Fast Eddie.
@Oliver-jv5ww

if you want to give braking while downshifting another shot, try adjusting the positioning of the front brake, having it set up right makes a huge difference. for me it went from something that was impossible to do smoothly to now i do it every time i am slowing down on the street
@ManCannotRide
3 жыл бұрын
@@Oliver-jv5ww Thanks. I set the front brake lever so that if you put a ruler on top of the grip and the lever, the angle is 2-3 degrees downwards towards the lever. It works best for my preferred ergos. When I was still rev-matching while on heavy braking, I use my middle finger to squeeze the brake lever while my pointer finger and thumb do the "blipping" of the throttle. I tried eliminating the inherent pulsing action that disturbs the braking force but I can't eliminate it totally like what the video said that it's close to impossible. Hence I learned how to slip the clutch by trailing the clutch lever. It's all in the fingers and it feels good.

This is one of your best videos you have uploaded. It is easy to understand and detailed, illustrating how to trail brake with varying speeds and of course with downshifting as an additional option. Yes, I agree with you. No need to rev match if easing out the clutch lever is in coordination with the rolling on the throttle and trailing off the front break.

Brilliant vid Eddie, massive help for me to improve control of the bike when cornering thank you. Emphasises the key elements so well, thank you. One thing I haven't seen out there as yet is how to judge the speed for cornering as a newer rider. Why is one a 40mph corner and one a 50mph corner? How do you instinctively know this within your comfort zone? As a newer rider to a 700cc bike I am feeling my way around how much lean but is there a good way of reading this better than my guesswork presently?

Hi!! Your channel is amazing!! I have a question. Is there anything being done with the clutch at all while cornering? I know pulling in the clutch removes all power going to the back wheel. However, I just wasn't sure if when you're braking/trailbraking into a corner, and when a decrease in speed occurs, if there would be a need to downshift into a lower gear, while still in the corner. Or, would the change in gear (downshift) happen before entering the corner? My apologies if this is a stupid question. I'd rather ask and get the right answer, than not ask and, um, well, you know... LOL. Thanks!!

Nice video, as always ! Good to see that all the hype with trail braking is definitely evolving from Mandatory to Use it when you need it, on all the good KZitem channels ! In fact, trail braking, SLPR and the Keith Code methods ALL require a proper evaluation of the turn in order to respect the friction circle. On the track, trail braking will help you not to be passed on every corner entrance !

Thanks for this visual demonstration. I've been trying to get better using my front brake when trail braking. Seeing the timing of it all is going to help a lot in my practice sessions. I'm pretty much a slow to medium pace rider now-a-days and the rear brake works fine but it's nice to have the skills available when I miss read a corner and come in a bit hot and around those blind corners. I've never seen the point in rev matching, I've always done what you said, slowly feed the clutch out despite everyone telling me I had to rev match or I'd loose traction on the rear tire.

Only to clarify. At fastpace, the order for taking blind corners is: > Pull out the throttle to 0, slowly moves to the exterior side of the road, body position > Progressive braking (front only or both) > Once the road starts to blend, stay in the outside, trail braking with some lean (less and less brake pressure as more lean you need), searching exit, eyes always as far as possible > Continue searching exit at braking light on > Once you see the exit, full lean to point the bike in the exit direction, knee down if necessary > When bike is pointing right direction, progressive throttle as you stand up the bike, maximum body position > Go body position to normal Right? Awesome videos, keep up the good work Cheers from Spain!

Good one! You're holy man...guardian angel for many, when I was young...errr, there was nobody to tell us "how to". All we did was just an intuition, some of us are no longer here:-(. From my experience - I do what suits me best at the moment, if I know the road I can play with downshifting, hanging cheek off, rev-matching and so on + front brake. When on uncharted terittory - pace sometimes the same, sometimes slower, dependent on environment. When some corner takes me by surprise - harder on the front brake, and no throttle or maintain the throttle and gears when see where the exit is. Still alive:-).

When you're keeping the brake light on during a blind corner, are you adding a bit a bit of gas for maintenance throttle? If so, what effect does using front brake and throttle at the same time have on handling / stability? Could that result in losing traction due to opposing forces being applied? Or does shortening the trail of the bike have a beneficial effect for tight corners?
@mrv9467
3 жыл бұрын
He talks about just pressing the break enough to have the tail light on. It's not going to create an issue if you are just slightly accelerating. It helps because if you find an obstacle during that blind turn, having that little pressure will prevent you from being too aggressive on the break. Instinctively you will increase pressure on the break while closing the gas and having the bike stand up to deal with the situation.

Pulling the clutch and downshiften to 4th and then 3rd then letting go the clutch. But i heard from a good (motorcycle-)mechanic friend of mine that said the way i downshift was not healthy for the bike. He said that you should downshift 1 gear at a time. What do you think about it/ how do you do it? Thank already!

And ended up purchasing a new 2021 MT-09... huge difference from 0 technology on the FZ-07 to having a customizable TCS, including Brake Control. I tested the entire range of the BC feature and found that on its maximum setting, its damn near impossible to grab the front brake too hard, lock up the tire, and drop the bike.. or go wide in the turn from braking.... at least at my riding ability. ... i feel like BC should be a mandatory feature for all motorcycles sold for the street...

Champ School still recommends downshifting and revmatching. They suggest using your finger tips to brake which gives your wrist enough room to blip the throttle without pulsating the brakes. The brakes only pulsate when you wrap your finger around the brake lever because that will transfer more wrist motion to the brakes.

Interesting. I never really thought about it before but now realized that I automatically do it when not using the brakes and only engine braking. It doesn’t happen when I am cornering because I usually (street riding not track) have already downshifted and it is a matter of modulating brakes depending on need. Normally only the front brake. I think the difference is I am not trying to get into a corner as fast as possible. If I am in too high a gear during an exit I will downshift if necessary. But this is all under the consideration that the objective is not to get out of a corner with maximum speed.

i have to say on my experience with braking while downshifting, i commute every day on my bike and every time i am braking i also downshift. the number one thing to be able to do it smoothly is to adjust the angle and distance from the handle bar of your front brake properly. after that its just a matter of practice, it is possible to get smooth at it. even under very hard braking i found its best to apply max brake pressure first, then as you start to ease off downshift to the appropriate gear, and then continue to gradually ease off until the apex.

It helped, but my friction zone sensitivity was horrible and I let go of the clutch abruptly mid-corner. Still jerky 3- I did something crazy and dragged the front brakes while taking the figures of eight Keeping the throttle and clutch constant. And magically the figure of 8 just happened. Later on, I learned that I should've dragged the rear brake instead of the front brakes. But the front brakes got me started. You have full and instant control on the bike when regulating the brakes (Front: high speed or Back: low speed). The front brake became my best friend since then. Typically in a blind corner, or when I am tempted by sweet corner that ought to be taken faster than usual ;)

you're welcome. The bike isn't jerky, you're just moving the throttle too fast...if you're using the clutch and you think it's jerky still...you're releasing it too fast. don't have to use the brakes at all for u-turns..you can ,but not necessary...keep at it!

Having a slipper-clutch one need not do rev- matching whilst down-shifting but you need to trail-brake only.

When I brake to slow down from medium/ high speeds I have difficult to lean the bike because the Force of inertia pushes me towards the tank . I mean, I can lean the bike if I move my body outside the bike before I brake. Where am I wrong?

Maybe you can use tank gips and grip the tank more?

Why would you cover the front brake while rev matching? Of course if you twist the the throttle with your fingers covering the brake it’s going to pulse the suspension. Moto gp racers don’t rev match bc there is no need with tech there bikes have, does it for them.

If you’re braking hard and need to downshift, that’s why. Almost all race bikes have that feature.

PLEASE do a video on body position vs no body position. something I’m seeing very often are these guys that go through canyons and don’t use body position and they’re very good riders. When we discuss it they say the bike won’t turn very sharp without leaning it over that far .. yet I am able to use loads of body position with very little angle and still make a tight turn

Nice visuals with the blue tape and Sharpie lines. Trail braking and accelerating out of corners have their place. There are times not to trail brake or accelerate out of the corner. Using acceleration to stand the bike up is silly if your corner exit is the same place as your next corner entry. (Counter-counter) steering will stand the bike up quickly. Motorcycle riding is just physics. It involves position, velocity, acceleration and mass. “Centrifugal” force, the co-efficient of friction, gravity and the vector addition of forces occurring at the contact patch are other physics concerns. 17th century science. The basic positions throughout the corner are: braking marker, corner turn in, apex and corner exit. You are at one velocity at the braking marker. You are at a lower velocity at corner turn in. The maximum deceleration you can achieve determines the difference in velocity (and difference in position). Racing is doing everything at the maximum. Street riding is about leaving bunches of safety margin and having a bit of fun. Achievable speed through the corner is mostly a function of turning radius. I am avoiding the word “proportional” as centrifugal force goes up as the square of the velocity and is not “linearly proportional” with velocity as some might infer. If you were going in perfect circles around a skid pad you would stay at a constant (maxium) velocity. Maintenance throttle is an excellent concept and well worth mentioning. Accelerating out of the turn is stupid in this situation. It is all “out of the turn”. Well, a circular arc is just a section of a circle and will have the same maximum velocity as the circle. You have to SLOW DOWN mid-turn to accelerate at corner exit. If you could maintain your higher corner exit speed throughout the corner, you would. The oldest cliché in racing is “optimize corner exit speed so you can carry extra speed all the way down the following straight”. It is true. The shorter the following straightaway, the less beneficial this is. The more technical a race track, the more this matters. You are giving up mid-corner speed to accelerate out of the turn. Racers don’t give up much mid corner speed for anything. The higher the horsepower the more you can point and shoot. The lower the horsepower the more you want to keep up corner speed. There are no hard and fast rules covering all circumstances. If your corner has a changing radius it is likely you will slow down for the shorter radius and speed up for the larger radius. I’ll cut it off here. Remember to look into the turn and enjoy!
