I’m a mountain biker and ride all winter long. I just got into road biking and have already been out in 17 degree Fahrenheit. I found cheap gear on amazon thermal bib pants and jacket under 100 dollars. I also have absolutely cold hands and feet for my feet I got again cheap rechargeable heated socks off Amazon 30 dollars and they last around 4 hours on high setting. For road biking been through like 7 pairs of good gloves and non of them kept me warm enough. The best thing is bar mitts with thin gloves. Now my hands stay toasty warm. Oh I do use cheap over shoes. Great content 👍

The only thing I'll add is slow down a little. Going too hard will make you overheat and you try to remove the layers and freeze. Find that nice medium of getting your heart rate up, keep it up for 60-90min, then go take a shower to clean off and warm up

Tips for British winters: 1. Layers, layers, layers. Two jackets or two pairs of thermal underwear is no taboo. 2. Mittens. Wind and water proof. Piling on gloves is also allowed in my book. 3. Warm shoes and waterproof and windproof oversohes. Neoprene works wonders. 4. Be visible: as many reflective materials as possible. Lamps on at all time, spare lamps/batteries. 5. Transparent eyewear to be able to keep your eyes open on higher speeds and/or during rain. For winter-winters: 1. Studded tires or Continental's sticky winter rubber option. No if's no but's. If there's frost - it's a must. 2. Chain has to be cleaned or at least oiled often. Especially if salt is applied to clean the roads.

@@matejjuhas1595 there's a video on the KZitems about a town in Finland where 50-60% of the townspeople bike in -40 C weather. The bike paths are cleaned with special equipment and are almost entirely separated from the motor vehicle infrastructure. They don't have any special bikes/tires either. So yeah, you can bike with no special equipment (apart from warm clothes) in some cases. But as soon as you have to break or maneuver on ice covered surfaces (or ride on uneven ice) without studded / winter tires - you are asking for trouble. Doing the same with cars or pedestrians moving nearby can be dangerous.

Riding in the snow is so much fun! First it may seem a little sketchy, but you shouldn't worry too much about crashing because it usually happens at low speeds and you most likely fall into soft snow with no damage to you, your kit or your bike. One thing you should consider is whether to use clipless or flat pedals. There is a temperature window of a few degrees above and below 0 C when the snow is really sticky and packs into the bottom your shoes making clipping in impossible. One advice is to avoid putting your foot on the ground as much as possible, and if not avoidable, put your heel on the ground. An allen key or similar tool can be used to scrape out snow around the cleat area. So it is possible to use clipless pedals on snowy conditions, but if it's too much of a hassle, it's maybe better to use flat pedals.

Nice tips. I might add three more. Dropbar mitts help tremendously with cold hands by blocking the windchill on descents, and are inexpensive. Electric gloves even at the lowest setting also help. After 17 winters cycling to work every day I've learned a thing or two. First spend as much as you can on clothing. The more expensive stuff is so worth it. Second try a night winter ride. Especially nights with full moons. Properly dressed a late night subzero winter ride during a full moon can be magical. Bonus tip. Cold toes? Wrap them in aluminum foil for added warmth.

I would ride in all weather year round because that is how I commuted to work and home for 10 years in the winter 20 degrees was nothing with my stocking cap gloves and goggles. The first half an hour is the hardest. Hands, feet, nose and ears painfully cold no matter what I have on over them. Once I've got through that warm up period they become bearable. Getting a good pair of clear or blue blocker glasses or goggles is a must for cold weather riding when light levels are low. Without them, the cold, dry air will cause your eyes to water excessively. Also, you are wearing one but did not mention an under helmet head warmer. Most of your body's heat is lost through the top of your head and with a regular road helmet that is designed to move air across the top of the head for cooling in warm weather, it can pull heat from your body very fast in cold temps.

David, I also suffer from poor circulation and cold hands. If they're warm enough at -10c then they'll be sweaty at +10c, for instance. My solution (from over 50 years of experience of cycling in all weathers) is to avoid choosing a single pair of gloves, which can only cater for one small temperature range. I use one pair of thin wool gloves, with a pair of lined leather gloves, and a pair of waterproof unlined over mitts. Which gives seven different permutations of temperature accommodation , so that my hands are never sweaty and never cold, even down to the very coldest temperatures seen in the UK. My second tip, given that if you have an accident you could be lying on the ground for many hours waiting for an ambulance. is to bring a few extra layers, together with an emergency space blanket or, even better, an emergency bivvy bag you can climb into. If you're lying on a gas verge with a fractured pelvis, for 12 hours or more because of an ambulance shortage, staying warm will take precedance over trying trying to look "cool"'. And my third tip, given that I see a lot of cyclists who appear to be completely unprepared for breakdowns, is to carry tools and spares. If you're stuck on the hill, and conditions are deteriorating, being able to patch a ripped sidewall, or replace a spoke, could be a life saver. We're often told that hill walkers must carry the right safety gear, but this seems to go out of the window for many cyclists. For obvious reasons, and especially in poor weather, riders should consider carefully what they need to carry when they venture out.

Preparing for winter-rides is easy. If been commuting whole-year-through for twenty years. Cover up every inch of your skin in at least one layer of suitable cloth (e.g. no cotton on harder or longer rides, it will get soakingly wet) and then just go fast enough to produce the heat needed. Don't go faster or you'll sweat and don't rest too long or you'll freeze. Take special care on neck, ears and fingers which go uncovered most of the year and are easily neglected.

Hello from Stockholm! My absolute favorite piece of winter gear is my 45Nrth Gravdal 700cx38 tubeless-ready studded tires. There are hardly any studded tires that can be run tubeless, and finding a retailer that stocked them was not easy, but fortunately I found a pair. They are horrible on tarmac, but sooner or later you'll encounter a road or a trail that is just smooth ice from edge to edge and then you'll be glad that you have them. I even got up a few pretty steep climbs that were just ice, ice and ice last winter! Also, I went on an overnighter early this year, and since I started a bit too late I had to ride in the darkness, on some gravel roads where it was almost impossible to tell the gravel apart from the ice. Do I need to say I was happy when I finally reached my camp spot? Regarding shoes, I absolutely hate overshoes, so if I need them I see it as a sign that I need to get warmer shoes and socks!
