I went Direct Duty from BMT, No tech school because I already completed college courses in my assigned job. Started (On-the-job-training) OJT, and correspondence courses to get my 3 and 5 level. They put us in a big house on base. All was good. Got a loan for a cheap car, didn't really need one living on base. Pay was tight, Airman Basic pay $376 dollars per month for the first 6 months. Basically the only bills we had were a $30 / mo. car payment and groceries. That's when you could get a full cart of groceries for $25. Everything else they provided. I rode my bike back and forth to work. Went from working as a civilian making $3 per hour in a crap production facility to working on advance nuclear weapons systems, supersonic aircraft, missiles, and everything that supported the mission.

Thanks man, I'm tryna join early 2024 and being a military brat (Army) I've seen most of these mistakes made by E2s and E3s but it's always nice to have a reminder of what not to do.
@golfery5119
Жыл бұрын
A lot of this video is about tech school (aka AIT) too and keep in mind that just like in the air force in general, trainees in tech school get somewhat more freedom than army trainees do. I've seen it where a thirty something year old man is not allowed to go to the bathroom by himself because he's initial entry army, but a 19 year old initial entry air force is treated with more maturity because he's air force instead of army. So I guess that's more rope for air force to hang themselves with? So you think.it might be safer to join the army so you can be more restricted and treated more like a little kid, which would prevent you from making these mistakes in the first place, especially in AIT after basic?
@guccigranny7386
Жыл бұрын

@golfery5119

@@guccigranny7386 I was being a little sarcastic about being "safer" to join army but it's most definitely true that both in initial entry training (basic and ait/tech school) and operational, lower enlisted army soldiers, even those who joined at later ages like their late twenties or even thirties, are not only treated "rougher" but also treated more like little children compared to lower enlisted people in the air force, even those air force people who joined as teenagers out of high school. the army likes to think that everyone in the army, regardless of their mos, is infantry and you can't spell "infantry" without the word "infant' For example, nevermind the fact that the army's pt test is more difficult (the most difficult behind the marines'), soldiers in most cases , unless they have a really specific mos and or unit, can't be trusted to do pt on their own, they have to do mandatory morning organized group PT regardless of how well they pass their PT tests, whereas so many people in the air force either do PT less often or are actually trusted to do PT on their own altogether. Or soldiers have to do early morning formations where they stand and stand and stand in the cold for however long for "accountability" a few hours before they report to duty, whereas air force only does this with initial entry trainees in tech school and once operational, airmen do accountability when they actually report for duty.

My older daughter just got to her first assigned base. She had a brand new 2020 Civic before she joined AF. Then we sold it for more than what she got it in 2020. And we got her a brand new Toyota Cross. Parents can do it for them. Be sure to let them know, there’s better deal out there if you don’t rush things. Besides, this days, buying brand new car is better deal than getting a used car.

@@louie88580 actually the way the dealership works today, buying brand new is way cheaper than. 2-3 year old car. Oh my daughter is E3. But she had a 2020 Civic that we bought brand new in 2020. She put her savings for downpayment and we also gifted her a few. She bought it for 25k less her d/p she ended up with 19k+ in mortgage. Then we sold her car at carvendee for 28.5k in 2022 and we bought her 2022 Cross. She made a 10K d/p the money she made from selling her used car.

Oh plus, you get better rate when it’s brand new and you also get more rate discount if you do automatic payment. Shop around, pick dealers that are military friendly who give additional discount for active duty personnel. Also make sure they don’t charge you extra in the packages that you don’t need. And make sure there’s also no markups.

Awesome awesome advice. 20+ years active duty taught me all that but one lesson that I wish I had learned early is the difference between a first termer and career airman and how that affects cross training. I loved the Air Force but hated my job. Didn't think about cross training until after I reenlisted the first time and by then the opportunities are few and far between. You had to be in an overage to be let out of your AFSC and that NEVER happened. So if someone goes in and isn't happy with their job, address it during the first term. Keep up the great work.

I have been in the same boat for a while now. I have been talking to actual people who are in currently and have been reading so much from people who served or are serving. It seems the people who enjoy it more than they hate it put their head down and work hard and are ambitious and WANT IT and are using their time in wisely (towards a degree or some sort of job in the civilian sector or to further their rank and make a career of the whole thing). They mostly have a good time and enjoy what they do and embrace "the suck" together. This is the term I've been hearing. Compared to someone online who will find any reason to complain and probably weren't happy before they joined in the first place. This is the same for any sort of "review" or even in high school when people would tell me how terrible Mr. whoever was and then I'd get to class and he was perfectly fine, yeah there were parts of the class that sucked but it was completely manageable and the people complaining about it were exaggerating it to a ridiculous degree.

When I first entered the AF, there were more 20 year Staff Sergeants (E-5) and 23 to 25 year Techs (E-6) than you could imagine. I actually thought it took 12 to 15 years to make SSgt. The truth is there were serious freezes during the 50s and early 60s. Viet Nam opened up the door somewhat then WAPS showed up. Anyone with a 7 or 8 in their APR records was doomed. Anyone who could not take a test (a lot of guys) was stuck. When the 5 system with endorsements topped at the Wing CC, people were told that a "4" was promotable. Just like the officers were told that a "promote was promotable (if you had lots of general endorsements before that yes). In short the AF lies their butt off.

If it’s hyperthyroidism, you can join with that as long as your medication levels you out.

I’m sorry but I’m not familiar with that. I’d recommend gathering your medical records, and get with a recruiter. That’ll be the only way to truly know.

Helo mr joddy,I have a question,I been worried about meps,going on Tuesday, i am 6ft tall,my weight fluctuate between 206 and 208,and 17_19.2 percent body fat. Do u think I would be good to go
@Jodywithawhy
Жыл бұрын
You’ll want to get to about 197 lbs if I’m being honest. That’s means you’re going to have do some work to qualify. Which also means your going to need a strong reason why you want to join. That way when you feel like giving up because you have to lose 10 lbs, that strong “why” will keep you going. I hope that helps. Good luck.

@strumminandwrenchin9162

LOL ARE YOU SERIOUS BRO?! All you need is HS diploma(preferred), physical and medically healthy, score a 31 on the ASVAB, which will get you lower tier jobs in the Air Force, US citizenship or legal resident alien with green card, between ages 17-39, NO CRIMINAL RECORD, NO FREQUENT Drug and alcohol use, and you should definitely make it. As far as a commercial license, pfft, you can definitely join the same as having your high school diploma.

I'm typing here, his mama. 23 years AF family. but me, my shy son, his younger brother (10th grade like Tony soprano) dumped. saw his dad twice. in 10 years. brother talked him to talking to him, back to hawaii, collage, etc. nope. talked him into military, thats all.@@Jodywithawhy
