I manage the building you see on the left of the screen at 1m18s. To the right of the bus terminal is the street with the highest crime stats in the city. Alot of snatch and grabs happen in this street and these guys run through our building. Luckily we are able to catch majority of them.

When you hear "please sir", "I don't ask money" or "just milk for my sister" 99.99% of the time it's a kak story so just walk away. As for "Mr I don't know anything", he definitely does XD. Having lived in the CBD I've heard these stories daily and yes, they do sell the goods back to the shops. I've witnessed the diapers and formula being sold back to the same shop they were bought from. These stories are rehearsed, they're relentless and you get to know their faces. Sorry that this happened to you

Call that a wakeup call. Don't be naive in Cape Town. You were not even in a dodgy area as far as crime here goes. It is clear that the guy was not malnourished. As a rule of thumb, any complete stranger approaching you on the street with the intention of initiating some unsolicited sort of conversation should be a red flag. Say no and be assertive. There are way too many glue-sniffing street kids and tikkops on our streets, all of whom are only too happy to exploit a kind hearted white guy with a camera. There are other ways to help humanity. Sorry if that sounds condescending, I don't mean to rain on your parade.

If you know you're in one of the most dangerous cities in the world, WHY on earth would you follow a random beggar into any place??? 😂I guess the aim of the video was to seek out trouble but just a couple of tips to tourists for walking around, walk like you're going somewhere specific, pay no attentions to beggars but don't be rude, just tell them you're busy / carry no cash / or any simple way to say no while you're in your stride and lastly keep scanning, ALWAYS SCAN!

At least it gave you some really interesting content and will help others. He probably just returned it to the store for a refund and they will keep some of the money and give him some. Unfortunately, when you are kind to people, and smile and greet them, they will often see that as an invitation to ask you for something--that's just the reality of living in such a financially unequal society. This means that you have to learn to be a little more standoffish. If you watch Kurt Katz videos, he is an absolute master at this. He's friendly, but he keeps a wall up and doesn't give random people an opening to engage. Once they start with the story, you will be stuck so it's better to just greet and keep moving. if they ask you for something, you just say, sorry, I don't have any cash on me, and keep going.

The area is full of character but you have to keep your wits about you. Not dressing and acting like a tourist is the top tip. i.e. no backpack, not filming, know where you are going. As for the diapers/baby formula thing, it's misleading to say these just go for the drugs trade. They mostly go to young families who are glad to buy them at a 'discounted' price.

Hi Phillip I wold like to address a few inaccuracies in your video. Although I notice on KZitem that the protest March is sometimes referred to the "Purple Rain March" it is not so. The proper name is The Purple Peoples March, so named because the police had put purple dye in the water cannon to mark the people for easier arrest. I was in this march and was also arrested. For weeks after the march graffiti appeared around the walls of Cape Town declaring, "The Purple People Shall Govern" or "The Purple Shall Govern". This was a slogan coined in the jail cells while we were held captve after our arrest. Today still there is a mural on the side of a building in Johannesburg covering the building from top to bottom of a purple Nelson Mandela with the words "The Purple Shall Govern". A lovely memorial to that protest march. The Malay Quarter as it was known had in fact very few people coming from Malaysia that settled in the Cape. The Dutch brought many people from Indinesia which is and area which Includes Malaysia, Java and a few other places. These people were not all slaves. Some were brought as workers to develope the Cape , others were sent here as prisoners that rebelled against Dutch rule in these Colonies and also some as slaves. I have an Ancestor who was brought here from Java and sold in the City into slavery. Lastly the houses did not gain there bright colous due to the emancipation of slaves. This is untrue as is many stories told about the colourful houses. It was a natural progression of pride and ownership when the people were allowed to purchase their properties from the Municipality after years of The City of Cape Town neglected to maintain these properties. This only started in the late 1990's and became much bolder colours at the turn of the millenium.

Hi Phil , nearly all scams are to pay for drugs. When people take drugs & get addicted they need a way to finance their habit. People find endless ingenious wàys to make money 💰. Once their method is found out ,they then need to come up with an alternative and new method of scamming. Maybe if they used their brains in a legal & legitimate way , they might be successful in life. This just shows the power and hold drugs have on people.

You,most probably got scammed. Any thing of value they asked you for is part of a scam. I would make them open the package . That way they can't take it back to the shop. Rather say no
