I've always noticed this in animations, the typical holding pose only works when the object being held is perpendicular to the arm, however if the object is facing forward and more parallel to the arm then it lies more on fingers, I think it's best to imagine holding a revolver or a shotgun, the positioning of the fingers is quite similar.

Here is where an art school would be of benefit. The instructor would probably tell "you" to pick up a similar object in your hand and look at how you are grasping/holding it, or have someone else do it and you inspect them. A class, either online or in person, on "Still Life" would be really good to cover these topics as "you" would be referring to a real life model and how their body is posed as per the subject/topic matter. Always a good reference is yourself; try doing the pose and see how you or a friend look in that pose.

I feel like references would help a lot of people. That’s actually how I do timing for animations. Either I have a video up of someone else or myself to get not just the pose but timing done right.

It's one of those things the absolute most of the people know, but never register on conscious level and thus struggle to replicate until it's pointed out.
