At first, I wasn't sure I wanted to share this vlog because I LOVE Japan and 99.9% of the Japanese people we met in a month traveling around the country were incredibly nice and welcoming. The people we encountered at this restaurant in Shirakawa-go and their "Japanese only" silliness isn't at all indicative of how most Japanese feel about visitors, so please do NOT hesitate to visit Japan.
Please note that I only published the footage I have of this altercation, and unfortunately I didn't capture everything. Why am I publishing this vlog? Because I want my channel to accurately reflect what happens to us when we're traveling-- the good, the bad, the ugly, etc.
As I said in the vlog, I wish I had kept my cool in this situation but I was just so SHOCKED to be pushed (hard!) three times by this punk and with no provocation on my part whatsoever. This would be surprising anywhere but especially in Japan, where people are typically so polite. In any case, I'm glad we discovered two other villages that aren't touristy which I am happy to recommend to you.
Gaining UNESCO status is supposed to help preserve places like Shirakawa-go but sometimes getting that UNESCO status can destroy a place too. At least 2 of the 3 towns are still intact.
