GREAT VIDEO Very informative!. It's wonderful that someone takes the time to rescue older good quality items instead of dumping them in this disposable society. The accent was hard to understand, but subtitles solved that. Thank you!

I've just got hold of a redcrest here in NZ of the same vintage 1979. It had been in storage for years but didn't have any leaks or patches. The rear valve had been replaced with a newer type used on the more recent Avons. Had a slow leak in the inflatable seat valve. A squirt of WD40 loosened up the spring and is now sealed. I had a similar Redcrest as a tender to my sailing vessel for 6 years which survived many a bashing on rocks, shingle, concrete piers and attacks by local kids in various parts of the globe hell bent on its destruction.

Just did similar with my Redcrest. With both my bikes out to workshops, I had space in my garage to carry out some repairs. all came out well, now looking forward to a little dry weather this weekend to test!

I just got a this same boat. The valves are different on mine. They a steal and have little rubber plugs inside the screw on caps. To inflate, you unscrew the vales a turn or two and put the pump to it. Then, simply tighten them and the hold the airpressure.

I have one that’s been in the bag for over 20yrs! (Red coloured Avon) I inherited it last year. Feel inspired now to unpack it and give it a full check over. Thanks for a helpful video.

I've just bought a small sail boat and it came with a Redcrest dinghy. It's1979 and it inflates OK and without any leaks but the vales need replacing. I was thinking about a new dinghy but having watched this i'm not so sure. Great video, thank you. Anyone have any ideas regarding an outboard mount bracket?

I just bought one of these and it was in a bad state. Good to see what it will look like when it is finished. What glue should you use on this boat for patches etc.
@EvansBoatwork

You’ll need a contact adhesive formulated for Hypalon, which is the type of fabric the boat is made with.

Outstanding Video. I was just given a 2001 Avon Redcrest and the only issue is a sheared off valve. So lucky I found your video. Question, what type of solvent are you using? I've never worked with Hypolon.

This is a great video, really useful as I also need to replace the valves on an old one of these. I was also wondering if you made a floor for it? I was just going to use mine for rowing about on a lake with the kids but not sure if I'd need a floor for that or no.

Well, I’ve not had a solid floor for mine and have been ok transporting people and kit. However, having a roll-up slatted floor to give some stability under foot would have been a nice accessory to have…

What type of paint did you use for the black panels?
@EvansBoatwork
3 жыл бұрын
It is a ‘rubberised’ paint that is formulated for hypalon tubes, available from most inflatable repair kit suppliers. It is quite thin and easy to apply.

Great video! Wondering did you need a particular (non standard) foot pump adaptor to inflate or is it an out of the box adaptor?

Just standard, nothing special.

I have one in a similar condition (before refurb). Can you suggest a place I could sell it? And a rough price? Would it be worth restoring to make a profit? Thanks

Hi. Difficult to obtain but the brackets do come up for sale used from time to time. Just keep searching online. Failing that, any competent metal worker can fabricate one for you.

@@EvansBoatwork tank you i wil adlk friend to weld it how does it handle with an outboard ? Have a 8hp 2stroke engine laying around shoud i try dis or is it dangerous to a sertent point?
@EvansBoatwork

It’s mainly the engine weight. The smaller the better with this type of soft floored inflatable. I used to have a 2hp Suzuki that was more than adequate for me. Suggest you look up the old Avon tech specs online....

What did u clean it with pls?
@EvansBoatwork
2 жыл бұрын
There are a few brands out there and it’s a detergent not a solvent, so search your local chandlery or go online but make sure the cleaner is suitable for the fabric of your inflatable, ie, hypalon or pvc.

Is there a special paint to use on the Avons?
@EvansBoatwork

Not specific to Avons but generic for the type of fabric your inflatable is made from, either hypalon or pvc usually.

I haven’t looked up the old specs but I used to have a 2.5hp Suzuki two stroke which was perfect because it was small, light and powerful enough with two crew and gear. I haven’t tried my current small outboard, a 4hp Yamaha four stroke yet...
