This is the first AVP tournament I went to see with my friends. Great memories. Thanks for posting this!

Classic line from Paul Sunderland at around 11:30. He tells Chris Marlowe that Karch Kiraly mentioned he might play until he's 40 years old. Of course, Karch Kiraly was a force on the AVP until 40 and past that, winning a tournament at 44 (a record only recently broken by John Hyden) and retiring at 46 years old.

Hey Casey White, yeah, the court got smaller, which put less a premium on speed and endurance, things that Karch Kiraly was known for; and those things do fall off with age, even for him. Who's to say? I think the switch to a smaller court and to rally scoring changed the game substantially. Sand volleyball moved away from a game of endurance and mental toughness (if you could just grind it out, you were never really out of a match with sideout scoring) to more of a power game. Different rules tend to favor different types of players.

Hovland sets the ball tight and went up to joust. Smart play.

Sunderland and Marlowe were nice back then not mentioning once how poorly Hov was setting.
