A lot of this kind of music was called punk back then. Later musicologist compared the early 2000s pop with Sex Pistols and Nina Hagan and were like.... "wait a minute?.... this is not the same thing" so pop-punk is often used now. Also, EMO has broadened and loosened its definition over time.

Why was she about to cry? In the beginning when she said ppl label her punk & she says she's not, she seemed upset. Poor girl(I'm not into her music, but at least she has talent!) That would suck having to deal with ppl obsessed with labels. Most of these comments seem like a huge argument about what's punk-Punk is attitude. It's not clothes or hair or even playing an instrument, it's all out Do-It-Yourself Attitude! I know old ladies who are more punk than "punk"! My music is trash rock bcuz I quite literally live on trash-groundscoring, dumpster diving, etc.,but punk is a big part of it(as is "grunge"). Who cares what it's called-if ppl are too busy bickering about labels, then they'll just miss the show! So screw it, ROCKNROLL! -Coyote (Knute Lindstrom)

The amount of music snobs in this comment section is mind blowing. You can listen to a variety of different genres of music and yet not be a snob, if you think your "superior" taste in music gives you the right to be so cruel to artists then i am sorry to say you never understood the essence of being a music lover. Have some shame and remember it's cruelty like this that made artists like Chester Bennington commit suicide. People truly have no remorse. Live and let live, proving your music taste is superior and fanning your narcissism by ripping people apart is nothing to be proud of.

So you just read a random article and believed it? Jumped to conclusions and passed your judgement? People in the media say all sorts of crap, not everything is true. She was a teenager, probably a tomboy, later as she matured her style changed. Ask me, I was a tomboy during my teens because i grew up with brothers but slowly as i grew up and started exploring i realized i really liked pretty girly clothes, i just never thought i was pretty enough to pull them off, as i gathered more self confidence i started wearing the clothes i actually liked. People go through all sorts of phases, they change, their style changes, doesn't mean they were fake.

It's not even about her shitty music. It's about her trying way too hard to be someone she's not and then trying to take it back acting like she has no idea where people got this idea she was trying to be punk and hardcore. Uhh cuz you said it yourself AND try to dress and act that way so what do u expect people to say...

@paradise666ify6
10 жыл бұрын
Greg Wilhide I don't disagree about Sid Vicious. He was more about trying to portray an image than a good musician (if a musician at all). I think that's common knowledge. I'm actually almost 30 years old in case you're curious (which it appears you ARE extremely curious about my life and have taken it upon yourself to assume a lot of details about my life lol which is just a tad creep status) I actually don't even listen to punk. I think punk rock is pretty fucking shitty actually. I listen to an array of music: many genres of metal (no, not that progressive "hardcore" stretched out earring tattoo sleeve poser metal lol - more like thrash, grind, technical, etc.), blues/soul/funk, classic rock, oldies, techno/house, etc. Anything that is good and requires talent and originality I can appreciate--someone trying to be someone they're not I cannot respect. And for the record, Rancid is pretty fucking gay. I don't listen to that shit fyi. Sorry I don't listen to kitty kitty bang bang or whatever that song is that avril sings. i'm pretty sure nobody in their right mind would listen to that poppy bullshit. i am pretty judgmental i will admit BUT if you're admitting you listen to this poppy avril lavigne kitty kitty music and it sounds like your middle-aged since you're calling me young haha that is a little creepy...

Paradise666ify lol sorry, paradise. I grew up on punk/hardcore 90semo(fugazi, Sunny day real estate) and yeah the only kind of metal i like is thrash. The thing is im 22, and i rememebr going through life being a bitter judging asshole because of how punk was portrayed to people and i use to be one of those fucks who would ramble how punk ISNT avril lavigne or some shit like that... but now when i look back on it, and i really think about it... She was a 15 year old girl getting a record deal. A young girl who looked up to country artist and was getting into other stuff that was kinda that would appeal to her age. The early 2000s skater/pop entry level mtv punk and all those canada skate punk bands from her area.. I guess what im trying to say can you really hate a 15-17 girl for being labled punk by the media because of her background. Of course theres going to be butthurt TROO PUNK kids but fuck em... people just need to think about this stuff. Sorry again im just a dude whos getting nostalgic over a cheesy pop/wanna be punk girl from 2002. Also a funny side note is one of her original bassist was in a famous punk hardcore band called Grade from canada. if i could i travel back to 02 and bring all my classic punk records like the descendants or something and then avril and i can sk8 off and crash malls like cool kids while singing complicated.

It's interesting that it's the tweens that say she's punk... Cause evidently she's not, they see punk as the checkerboard sweatbands you buy from Claire's accessories. It's cool that she's at home with being herself though :]

@Hoppus217 No thats where your wrong. She wrote Breakaway(the song kelly clarkson sung), Girlfriend, Alice, My Happy Ending, Sk8er Boi, Keep Holding On, and lots more. And she plays the guitar and piano so don't give me that crap about how she doesn't play a instrument!

People seem to have to take sides... I LOVE punk music, i grew up with Ebba Grön, Asta Kask and The Clash and Exploited and I WILL always love it. But I like Avril too. I think she has a pretty voice and nice songs. Why cant you just listen to both?

i really appreciate and respect her denying being punk because i do hear peiople call her music punk and it makes me want to throw myself into a burning ditch. Her music style is a little pop punk (which is very different) at most.
And haters should know that we (fans) are not going to fight with anyone calling her "Bitch" ..We don't want to look like stupid people :)

@greenday10fan Obviously you don't know what punk is.Avril is not labeled as anything. She's just Unique Avril Lavigne.Just because she wears clothes that might resemble being "punk",doesn't mean she is.For example,I am a Christian, but I dress like Avril from time to time.It doesn't mean I'm not a Christian anymore and I've gone all punk.I just like that style. But people always assume that. But you can't tell everything from clothes.Everyone just needs to stop with labeling and sterotyping okay?

@cky283 Just because she wears those doesn't mean she's trying to be punk. She was just a tomboy, that's all

@jerryonlysucks iggy pop and the stooges came out in the late 60's. they werent really labeled "punk" at first, cuz it wasn't really a genre yet, but they pretty much were

You just said it. It's not a look. It's not a sound. It's a philosophy and The Clash were one of the best examples of what Punk is. Even Johnny Ramone admitted that. Give me The Clash, give me The Jam and the Minutemen and you'll be giving me Punk. Screamers were OK also. I won't deny that.

Original punks from the 1970s and 1980s were very financially unstable people who rioted against their governments all the while drinking alcohol and shooting up heroin with each other in hotel rooms. I don't recall her ever doing any of this stuff.

I'm not saying this to say Avril is punk, because she isn't, but Punk has evolved since the 1970's and 80's. There are different aspects to punk than just rioting against the government (which is just anarchy, not solely just for punks because all punks arent anarchists and all anarchists aren't punks) and shooting up (If so, straight edge wouldn't exist). Punk is really more about being yourself and doing what you personally feel like doing without caring about what the mainstream says is ethical. DIY is a big part of it too, as opposed to purchasing really expensive things that can be made easily. It's about creative expression and taking little and making the most of what you have. That's what really identifies someone a true punk.
