Thank you for posting these. My father flew CF-100s out of Cold Lake and Comox in the mid-late 50s.

A GREAT Canadian success story ! The only completely designed and built military jet ever made. And they made 692 of them. For an early period of time they were the only "all weather" interceptor available to protect us.

Excellent, underrated interceptor...especially the later Mk IV and Mk V. Interesting note: Avro experimented with a retractable 48-tube FFAR ventral pack that would replace the .50 cal 8-gun pack. Unfortunately, when extended, it caused violent buffeting of the aircraft and had to be abandoned. Thanks for posting.

Did a bunch of NORAD exercises out off here in the early eighties with what became the EW version of the CF-100. Turning jets at 2:00 am in January in Winterpeg is a lesson you don't soon forget. Good reliable jet but very prone to torching.

Quite correct. The CF-100mk 5 has a tail span 3' wider than the wingspan of a Starfighter.

Too bad there is not a flying one today. I saw a F-86 Sabre-Jet with the Orenda engine and it was pretty cool.

@cybermarsactual It was a 1950's plane, so swept wings were still not used on all/for all planes. This was designed as an interceptor, very capable to counter slow bombers, straight wings for fast planes are not uncommon (Gloster Meteor). Canada also had the CF105 in develpoment and the Canadair Sabre for air combat.

I don't know about weird. I find the CF-100a rather good looking jet fighter. But, I do agree with your view of it looking like a mix of a Gloster Meteor and EE Canberra and I'll go so far as to say having a radar nose resembling that of a Lockheed Super Constellation.

I read a book called "Learning to Love the Bomb" that said Canada had status as a world power until Trudeau drastically downsized the Armed Forces in 1972. We actually had respect! I thought of that as I watched this video. Airmen from other countries must have found the CF-100 interesting.

It makes me sick when I see part of one (cockpit and body) sitting outside the Ottawa aviation museum, it has been there for years roting away I guess. What a way to die after so many hours of flying safely. I worked on them in the early 60's

@lrecollet This is the CF-100, the Arrow was the CF-105. Hence, this was before the Arrow. If you look at footage of the Arrow's first flight, the chase planes are a Canuck (CF-100) and a Canadair Sabre (an F-86 Sabre built in Canada). This aircraft was built many years before the Arrow, and for a much different purpose.

The CF-100 intercepted Russian bombers coming over the north all the time. It was one of the best aircraft of its day doing what it did.

Agreed. Quite sad. There are many in museums. Some could be made flight capable, but these museums would rather refurbish and fly planes with spinny things on the front.

The National Film Board of Canada produced a 33 minute film devoted to Canada's air defense capability (circa 1957). Anyone who's interested can watch this film online on their website (Title: "Canada's Air Defense"). The film features the CF-100 "Clunk" in all it's glory as a high-altitude interceptor. The plane isn't very glamorous but does have one striking feature: it has two engines, a requirement any all-weather Royal Canadian Air Force fighter must have. Sorry CF-35, but ya' don't rate.

The "Clunk" or "Lead Sled" - replaced by the infamous CF-105 Arrow.
@MrSerf2k

Correct - it was designed to intercept bombers on a collision course coming over the North Pole and fire the 58 rockets in a shotgun blast controlled by the onboard computer. It didn't need to chase anything down, although it held its own in dogfights against the CF-86 Sabres. (....at least, that's what my dad and the rest of the CF-100 crews said.....I'm sure this will start a internet dogfight with the "Sabre-jocks" LOL)

@synthfreakify , during startup in really cold weather the engines would shoot flames out the end of the tail pipes, very cool to watch but not how it is supposed to work. Combustion is supposed to happen before the turbine, not after.

I really don't know what you mean by "make them". I worked on them for a few years in St-Hubert before going to Germany to work on the cf-104. its just that I go by the museum almost every day and seeing an aircraft in tha state makes me sad for some reason.

You can see at 7:51 why rockets were phased out for fighter aircraft: They are clearly interfering with one another. Rockets are now used only by attack helicopters.
