I breathed a sigh of relief when you said you only had the 1 record. The way you dragged and dropped the tone arm on that disc made me cringe.

5:10 678 USD is on the high end of the range for these devices, but they vary a lot depending on collect-ability, condition, and location. You can often find them as-is-where-is for almost nothing, but the cost of shipping and refurbishing can easily put them in the hundreds. The plastic-woodgrain models from the 1970s tend to be the least appreciated but that could change as they get rarer and they sometimes need very little refurbishment (polishing up the plastic can make it look a lot more convincing, even if it still feels like plastic). This one has a really nice cabinet, maybe one of the last with real wood on the surfaces, and it sounds nice despite the fairly ordinary parts inside. The controls for the receiver also have more character than a lot of the ones from that era. I assume that no-FM is not a problem as long as there is a way to connect a tuner, mp-3 player, Bluetooth adapter or phone to the inputs.

There's still a lot here in New Zealand that sell for next to nothing(or given away if not working properly), all the ones I've seen are made from real wood. I was shocked at the price - it is very tidy, but still seems very expensive. I recently saw a tidy real wooden cabinet model, including a large box of records, for $30. I've always thought they're under-valued here, probably as there's still a lot around, and they take up a lot of space. Standalone record players(particularly more modern versions) sell for more. Presumably it was bought at an antiques store or hipster shop.

Hi Andrew , do you still have a connection to sales of reconditioned Stereograms ? I saw the website for Garage Irvine Radiograms and it displayed some nice units but the business no longer seems to exist . Would love to make contact there with anyone who might still be able to source this type of product. By the way the Stereogram you reviewed here is Lovely but I really liked a 1966 PYE Chevelle that Garage Irvine Radiograms showed on their site. Hope to here from you, appreciate your help Thanks Kind Regards Stephen .

Do people say it as letters in Australia?, I'm fairly sure here in NZ they pronounce it like a word. Much like FIAT & IKEA, which also aren't words.

Not aawa! AWA is NOT a word! It is an Acronym, the letters standing for Amalgamated Wireless Australia. The company was/is fully Australian-owned and supplied not only consumer-grade gear but also supplied studio gear for radio and TV stations. It's A - W - A!

You earned a thumbs-down for saying the brand-name as a word when it was an acronym which means the letters spoken individually: A - W - A!

I can't remember anyone speaking the name as letters here in NZ, though it's rarely heard of now. From memory I think people pronounced it 'A'-wah(phonetically), as opposed to 'I'-wah for AIWA. As pointed out by others, it's common to pronounce these anyway, eg: FIAT, IKEA, NASA, GEICO, UNICEF. General acronyms = SNAFU, AWOL, FUBAR, SCUBA(originally a brand name), ZIP code, SWAT, NIMBY, D.A.R.E, CAPTCHA, and of course ALF ;) Just about all the ones that aren't pronounced as a word would be difficult to say, such as BMW, IBM, etc.
