When I tell people that Awake Exec is a “mindful leadership” course, sometimes they ask me about the difference between “mindfulness” and “mindful leadership.”
As we’ve covered in Videos One and Two, a huge part of mindfulness is the ability to see any situation as it is without judgment.
Mindful leadership, however, is more about the ability respond to any situation according to your virtues - or what you might call your highest self.
Sounds nice and all, but there is a slight problem. Namely, most of us aren’t very clear on our virtues.
Yes we all have general ideas about things that are important to us - family, friends, faith, health, career, etc. - but we don’t tend to know, specifically, what that really means or how to keep virtues at the forefront of our decision-making in each moment.
By contrast, however, the very best leaders understand how to align their actions with their values - which is exactly what we will be doing today.
In the video training for this module, you will learn:
• The Virtues, Intentions, and Goals (VIG) method for identifying your anchoring leadership principles, as well as specific actions you can take to embody them each day.
• How to set and pursue meaningful goals without wrapping your identity and self-worth in them.
• How to practice non-attachment while also holding yourself accountable for results.
When completed, the Virtues, Intentions, and Goals (VIG) pyramid will not only provide remarkable clarity around what you value most, but it will also serve as a framework for making choices in alignment those values - and a way to “catch” yourself when you’re not.
As you go deeper into this work, what you come to discover over time is that - just as mindfulness gives you a new way to evaluate your thoughts, the VIG pyramid gives you a new way to evaluate your success - one that is based on who you choose to be right now over what you hope to achieve down the road.
This is a foundation of serious contemplative practice not only because tomorrow’s success is the result of today’s focus anyway, but also because when you have your inner life in order, the outer tends to take care of itself.
The inner comes first. Always.
THIS is the secret to achieving success that lasts, and actually enjoying it as well.
Reflection Questions for Video Three:
1. What are your Virtues, Intentions, and Goals? How can you ensure that you keep them top-of-mind each day?
2. Can you think of a time in your life where you have blocked success by demanding that it show up in a certain way?
This last question is huge because when you get hooked into the exact form of what you think you need to be “happy” or “successful” (e.g. the specific job, goal, person, city, lifestyle, etc.) you can cut off access to opportunities that may be far better for you.
Not because they aren’t there. But because you can’t see them.
Again, it all comes back to inner-versus-outer focus because if the measurement of what makes you “whole” is always outside of you, then by definition you will always be grasping.
However if you focus instead on your ability to choose your perspective in each moment - then you can never be powerless.
And that’s the beauty of this practice.

P.S. It’s worth noting that - in years of doing this exercise with clients - many intuitively rename it the Values, Intentions, and Goals pyramid. This is all good. While some trainers may distinguish between values and virtues, I tend to put them in the same bucket. As such, please feel free to use whatever language works best for you. Words aren’t nearly as important as application anyway. :)
P.S.S. Now that you’ve gained some insight into your core leadership virtues, it’s time to turn our attention to staying grounded in them during moments of challenge and conflict. In the next video, Debra is going to walk you through four of the most important keys to communicating with impact and influence - so don't miss it.
