Careful with the USA reinforcement charts. It's been a while since I've dug through the FAQ but I think that the first turn for USA reinforcement is a log jam, since you have to take all the reinforcements off the chart in order. The first 6 are for Utah Beach ONLY, but you can only fit 4 into the beachhead landing box at a time. Therefore turn 1 Omaha is screwed for reinforcements. Also, I believe that the strafing on the 5 German tanks was incorrect. Strafing is done 1 unit at a time, so 10 dice targeting 5 tanks is different than rolling two dice against each tank, since you can theoretically roll two 1's on a single tank.
@TheHilltopPillbox

Thanks for watching and commenting! Yeah, I didn't discuss that on the video, but we made a house rule years ago that allowed for any number of reinforcements to come into the invasion zones, although we still kept to the 8 max per territory rule. Our reasoning was that the Germans won every single game with that other rule. Every one. The Germans would just pour stuff into the coastal zones and tie up the American reinforcements. Being a 10-turn game, we found that rule had the potential to decide the outcome by turn 3, if the Germans could log-jam the peninsula. Allowing any number to come into the invasion zones allows for a much more balanced game. But we also knew that other game groups would have different experiences than we did, so we just used it for our own group. I guess you've had different outcomes? Maybe you have some neato strategy tips that help with dislodging a dedicated coastal defense, and if so, please share them! Thanks again!

I've seen a German beachhead rush go both ways. You can tie down the Allies, especially the USA, which is likely to have trouble moving quickly from Omaha. But this also leaves your lines exposed to strafing from aircraft as you rush units forward. Omaha is 4 spaces away from the GR reinforcement zones, so they shouldn't be able to bring huge numbers forward immediately. And any of the tanks passing through an aircraft zone on a 2 space movement gets shot at on the way in, and on the way out of that zone. So if Germany is getting large numbers of reinforcements to the beaches quickly, I think the Allies may be missing some kill opportunities along the way. The other thing is that the Allies need to engage the German units quickly. Not in the beachhead zones, but they want to move inland and start duking it out. It can be pretty frustrating playing as the Allies and thinking "I could've done this if I'd had two more turns to grind down Germany". As for how to combat a German beachhead rush, playing with out of the box rules... I think the UK beaches have some flexibility for how your reinforcements are deployed, so you can switch things around pretty easily. Germany will have a hard time hitting you hard on all three beachheads, plus you can put fresh units straight into the fight. Again, Omaha is the big sticking point, and on several occasions I've jammed some free UK units from Gold beach into the zones past Omaha beach to act as blockers for the German reinforcements. Or, put free Gold beach UK units straight into the fight for Omaha, to keep the Allied stack at 8 for each fight. Combine that with progressively putting aircraft in the path of any reinforcements making the trek from the St Lo area. A strategy for Germany I've used before is to sit and wait. You only need to contest 1 city at the end of the game. You don't need to kill off the Allies, just let the clock run out. Good Allied aircraft use can either channel your movements and alter your strategy, or make you pay heavily for moving through certain areas. So, a low-movement, sit and build strategy can work. None of the German units attack better than they defend - not so for the Allies. Germany can really make the Allies pay by defending on the ground with a full 8 units in a zone, then reinforcing in their movement phase to get slightly better odds, since hopefully the Allies will have lost some units during their attack. As Germany, pulling available troops back towards Cherbourg can be a winner, too. It forces the USA to move troops north, and often by the time they've defeated the German stack babysitting the city, it's too late for them to get back into the fight elsewhere, except for maybe a couple tanks. I've also done similar in Caen, reinforcing on the east side of the map and keeping the UK occupied, until a point late in the game where you can put German reinforcements up the middle, leaving many UK troops unable to lend a hand taking St Lo. Now, all of this is based on personal experience and opinion. I'm sure I'm not right about all of this, but I've played my share of this game. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Keep up the great work!
@TheHilltopPillbox

Those are all good points! I also use the "sit and wait" with Germany, and I send as much up north as possible to tie down American units on the peninsula. Interesting move with UK units heading west to Omaha...I like it. Depending on how the UK is doing with the masses of tanks coming in from the east, that can really help take the pressure off of the invasion zone restrictions, as the US will be able to clear the beachhead faster. In my experience, the UK rarely has the luxury of assisting the US with all that armor running around, as my fighter rolls are notoriously bad! Thanks for the helpful advice!

So, what's your best German beachhead rush strategy? It's something I haven't done much, never had much luck with it.
@TheHilltopPillbox
6 жыл бұрын
I don't really have anything much different than anyone else, I guess. I always try to have 2 88's in each zone that I have tanks in, and that usually scares off the Fighters. Slows down a "rush" to the beach, but all my tanks tend to make it! As the German, I find that making the Allies stretch out to the far north is a given. Then, if I can bring a lot of armour onto the east side, it makes things a bit tougher for the British/Canadians. Of course, there is no set piece battle, as I tend to end up reacting to the Allies after they clear the bunkers out! Fun stuff!

@@TheHilltopPillbox We also feel that the French Underground Resistance needed some love, so we use a French miniature foot soldier (from Historical Board gaming) that can move around on the board between towns based on a dice roll, and without going into a lot of details (we keep it simple in order to keep this beautifully simple game uncomplicated), makes his way to an Allied territory. If there is an attack, his "info" given to the Allies results in a bonus one-die re-roll "mulligan" on a miss. If the French piece is hit in battle, they are gone and cannot fire back. But we're still playing with that rule. We also give the Germans one plane, re-creating the strafing over the beach by excitable Priller in the movie (the action historically happened) - one strafe, one role, then gone.

Could you breakdown the attack and defense for hits. You mention two 2s and 1 threes. I have trouble grasping the concept. Thank you for this excellent video!
@TheHilltopPillbox
6 жыл бұрын
Hello Kirk, no problem! In typical A&A games, an infantry attacks at a "one", which means you have to roll a "one" on a six-sided die to inflict a hit on the enemy. Artillery attacks at a "two", which means you have to roll a "one" OR a "two" in order to get a hit. Typically, you can pair up artillery with an infantry on a one-to-one basis, and then the infantry now attacks at a "two", or less. In this video, I made the mistake of applying the typical A&A rules for hits with infantry paired with artillery. In this version only (D-DAY), the artillery doesn't increase the attack value of the infantry. Not sure why they made that distinction, but, there it is. Fighters and tanks typically attack at a "three", or less, so they have a 50% chance to get a hit. So, whenever you look at the battle board, you will see an image of the unit you are using, and a number will be next to it. You need to roll that number or lower in order to inflict one hit on the enemy, whether in attack or defense. The attacker rolls first, and adds up all the hits. The defender then chooses which units to eliminate, but since the combat is considered to be simultaneous, those "hit" units get to fire back with their defense values before they are removed from the battle. The hits inflicted upon the attacker are immediate, since those units already fired during that round of combat. I hope that helps!
