Thank you for the review. I am a low intermediate wing foiler (e. g. I can jibe, but cannot tack yet). I am quite torn between HPS 1050 and PNG 1150. 🤔🙄

I think it depends on where you ride (how much wind) and how big you are. At 195 pounds I feel like the PNG 1150 would be huge and fairly slow for an intermediate rider. But I haven’t ridden it. I would consider 910 instead unless you want something really light wind. Then go HPS 1050. PNG is more forgiving. It’s a super user friendly foil. HPS is a little faster and maybe more glide because of speed. PNG has lower stall speed. But if you learn to pump up the HPS with some speed they have similar low end. I am riding smaller and smaller foils even in lighter wind. I recommend getting 2 front foils. One for light wind (maybe 1050 HPS) and then one for higher wind. (HPS 880 or PNG 850). I think you’ll be able to learn tacks easily on any of those foils.

I have slingshot 76 for 3 years and only road away from 2 heal to toe jibes should I really think about transferring?
@wingmanfoilclub

Yes. 100% not even a question if you can afford it. The 76 requires so much wind and has zero glide. I’m not a foil snob but you’re riding an anchor. If you want to buy new gear I can you help put together a package at The Foil Shop. If you want to go used I can give you some suggestions as well. But would be good to know how big you are, where you ride, goals, etc.

@@wingmanfoilclub dang Hahahh yeah when I do S carves i really like the side to side characteristics of the 76 but just like you said in light wind especially I drop down off foil before I can power up I might have to try that! Last day I weighed was 145 pounds Which I think is like 65 kilos maybe I live in Michigan and mainly ride in inland lakes so mostly light conditions and as far as goals I think i would eventually like to get more into freestyle My current board is the 120L ride engine moon buddy

@chadkeener2827 the 76 definitely turns well since it has no width! The great thing is you’re light. That opens up so many options to you. You can use a smaller foil than someone like me and still get some glide and light wind performance. If you like the 76 feel I would probably look at a Unifoil Vyper, AXIS HPS, AFS Silk or Takuma Kujira 2. Those would all be a good next step in your progression and good for freestyle with more glide and lift than your 76. If you get good bumps in the lake then I would probably go more for the AFS or Kujira 2 because they have more glide. Or look at a Unifoil Hyper2. Even the Unifoil or AXIS aluminum setups will be a significant weight reduction from the slingshot without breaking the bank. The other thing you should consider is moving to a smaller board. That will definitely help with the toeside riding. At your weight I bet you could go down to 85L or lower with no noticeable light wind deficit. Happy to put some quotes together for you or sign off on used gear packages. Maybe check FB market place for used AXIS HPS 880 or Unifoil Vyper 130 or 150 packages or Hyper2 170. The AFS and Kujira 2 won’t be available used. Hit me up on Instagram if you want to chat more.

@@davewestfoils I rode the 999. Definitely an impressive wing. I feel like it equates to driving a Porsche. It has better performance and anyone can ride it, but you have to know how to drive it well to get the most out of it. I don’t think it offers me any advantages over the HPS for freestyle, but I’d probably pull it out to race or something more ride oriented.

@@wingmanfoilclub I'm 212lbs. I've only been on foil for a few sessions. I haven't even attempted a jibe, but I'm headed to Bird Island Basin for a 4 day workshop and want to have reasonable gear. I'm on a Gong X-Over XXL foil (2200sqcm) and a 6'3" 140L Sky Wing. I don't have the right mast for BIB so I would need to either invest more in the gong system or switch to another platform. I don't know for sure, but I'm concerned that this foil is so thick that I won't be able to glide through jibes. I have a slingshot kitefoil so it would be fairly easy to add different front wing and use that. It has the right mast length for BIB (72). I might also consider a different platform if I felt like it were the right move for the longish term. I might also be needing a setup for my wife so If I don't use the slingshot setup, she might be able to. I don't understand when/why people move to systems like unifoil/omen/etc . . . or if they even make foils for people my size. If that is where I would want to end up (for example) then I would rather stick with one of my current platforms (gong/slingshot) until I'm ready for that. As far as riding style . . .I have no interest in jumping/freestyle. Right now I don't even need carvy . . . but my long-term goal is to be able to go to Quitauna beach and ride the small/medium sized waves. I may also be interested in a DW board/foil at some point (for light wind).

@scottstout okay that helps. First join the big dawgs wingfoil group on Facebook. Being skinny is a huge advantage in winging but us big dawgs make it happen. Clinton is 250 and rips on the waves. I am 200 and do flips and stuff. For BIB I would call and talk to Olivier at Worldwinds and see if he can just rent you something since it might even require a 65cm mast at times. But big board will help with the depth issue. If he can’t help you, Jeff Howard might be able to let you borrow something in exchange for a future purchase. He’s on the other side of the bay and I think he does Slingshot. Definitely does Naish and North. I have only tried one Gong and I thought it was fine. They make good cheap stuff and have some of the best riders in the world. But I would probably go with an American friendly brand moving forward. AXIS is definitely a good option for you. They make good big foils for big riders. Lots of glide and lift. They also make a good cheap aluminum mast like 100 bucks so you could justify buying a short one for BIB. They are also modular and have a lot of options so you can just buy new foils as you progress. Call Live2Kite in the Bay Area and they can help you out if you want to go that direction. Foils are all super different. The smallest change can make them feel totally different. That’s why it’s so confusing. I ride unifoil cause they are more fun foils. They tend to focus on turning in addition to pump and glide. Another option is to buy a short Cedrus aluminum mast. Then you can use multiple different foils. You don’t need a carbon mast at this time, but you might benefit from a better aluminum mast if you’re using the super heavy Slingshot that doesn’t have a slot and just relies on the M8 screws. As for your big Gong… most bigger foils have enough glide to jibe as long as their wingspan is around 1 meter or more. It gets trickier as you go smaller foils. For smaller foils to glide they require higher aspect and some other features.

I’ve had people demo the short then later put them on ultrashort and they absolutely noticed the difference. For stability, a little longer fuse and bigger tail is the way to go. I don’t think you lose that much performance either. I value stability a lot.

@@wingmanfoilclub Update.. I recently changed my gears from standard to short for the fuselage and 500 FR to 460 Flat for the stabilizer. In terms of lift and pitch control, I did not feel that much of difference at all. HOWEVER, there is a huge difference in jibing. The radius is much smaller (felt much loose). With the previous gear set up of standard fuselage & 500 FR stabilizer, my jibing was like 85-90% success rate. But, with new set up, it was like 15% success rate initially 🙄😑 although it is getting much better. Instead of getting HPS 1050, I got PNG 1010, but likely I need to get 910 as well for strong wind. Or.... should I get HPS 1050 instead of PNG 910?

@@Tobeon2 try the standard fuse with your new 460 flat rear wing. I think you’ll find the looseness is from the shorter fuse. The 460 flat should feel easy to turn but not loose I think. I think you’ll like the 910b for stronger wind (and eventually the HPS 880). The HPS is much much faster than the PNG. But the PNG is user friendly. I think HPS 1050 and PNG 910b have similar low end. If you want something fun and fast maybe try the HPS 880. By far my favorite AXIS wing. Probably with 910b a close second for lighter days.
