So much focus about the "middle east" is either theological zealotry or supposed "historical ownership" and bot are so misguided IMHO. The aforementioned book is actually written by a self-proclaimed atheist, pretty much like Ayn Rand, and, unsurprisingly, expresses the same opinions as Ayn Rand. "What Justice Demands" has a fabulous history and context on how we got to where we are today, and an utterly uncompromisingly clear view on what works and what doesn't to stop this endless cycle of human misery. It was published more recently than Ayn's interview, 2018 I think, and will give you lots of food for thought about what's going on.

To be fair, it was Phil Donahue's show. The people who came to sit in on his show knew his views and politics. They were his followers, his supporters, they watched him practically every day for years. Donahue was going to receive louder applause no matter what. Having said that, Donahue did make a fair point. Additionally, he didn't allow the argument to devolve into name-calling like you hear these days, plus he allowed Ayn Rand the chance to speak.

We were supposed to be a light unto the nations. In this we have failed. “It turns out that the 2,000-year struggle for Jewish survival comes down to a state of settlements, run by an amoral clique of corrupt lawbreakers who are deaf both to their citizens and to their enemies. A state lacking justice cannot survive. More and more Israelis are coming to understand this as they ask their children where they expect to live in 25 years. Children who are honest admit, to their parents’ shock, that they do not know. “The countdown to the end of Israeli society has begun.”
