It's normal when training to have to train around distractions, and having another friendly human and some dog playmates nearby is a great big huge distraction that Az hasn't faced before. Some extra practice with the boundaries of territory and with Az's recall when around the other dogs should make a world of difference, hopefully to reduce how many times you have to retrieve him!

You might want to consider - Will is new - Az may not have been just playing. Every time I have company my mastiffs sit with them, are totally attentive to them. But they are not betraying me lol. They are watching them. It looks like they are being petted and treated and cuddled. But they are watching. It’s my company who’s entertaining my mastiffs - the mastiffs are just making sure. Edit - I’ve had mastiffs who always sleep right up against me - sleep with company instead. Had one mastiffs that always stood between anybody in the house - he was protecting me. He went to the bathroom with them. If they were in their yard - he watched them. Also he’s hitting his terrible twos” and will push all his boundaries if he can.

One thing I have learned from raising a couple of dogs is when in doubt if you feel uncertain of how to communicate a correction or an instruction to a dog just try speaking to them in plain language as if they were a human… explain it clearly. I have been utterly shocked and amazed how many times a dog will understand clearly and follow instructions, even new ones that haven’t been drilled just from listening to plain language. In this video, your act of explaining the situation to the camera in Az’s presence is very effective and there is a very good chance that he is picking up on way more of what you are saying than you might imagine. He is behaving very well! You’ll likely want to teach him to love the ATV… taking him for ATV runs might be a very good way to give him controlled opportunities to explore the surrounding land, with you. If he ever has to go to war with predators and he ends up far away he benefits from knowing the surrounding territory? Cheers!
