Azul is a great game. Thanks Zee. I have learned over the years to PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT ZEE SAYS. When he likes a game, I tend to like it too. I have also gone ahead and bought games he did not love - and I regreatted it.

I was at Target the other day browsing board games. I saw this one. Gave it a quick read-over then thought, "nah, this isn't the game for me" and placed it back on the shelf. Your review showed me I was too quick to write it off. It looks like a game I would enjoy based on your review.

I think there can be another variant of gameplay where the score is not tracked. The first player to fill all his wall with tiles is the winner....What do you think Zee about this
@cursivecurses
7 жыл бұрын
Assuming this is the same scoring as in Qwirkle, here is the best way to explain it. Score each straight line that you EXTENDED or CREATED this turn. That way, you're not double-counting. How many straight lines are there that weren't there (in that length) before? Score those. No need for separate cases.
@Hieronymus-Pseudonymous

Yes, but then you'd still think you had created both a vertical and a horizontal line of 1 each.

And if "line" refers to multiple tiles, then you'd think you score no points.

I'm totally with you except for one thing. It's not pure tactics and no luck involved. Especially with two equally skilled players in the last phase before one completes a row on a relatively full board. There is quite a bit luck if someone gets perfectly matching tiles and the other one not. It really can make a difference that you'll notice when you play it a lot. But yes, most of the time the better player wins, but sometimes they also can lose... ;)

I think the line scoring isn't broken by the 1-point rule for a single tile. A line needs to have two points (tiles) to be a line. So a single tile isn't a line therefor doesn't score.

How can this be game of the year? It's perfect for accountants and people who love spreadsheets. Would love to build a nice looking pattern with all these tiles instead of more "add this to this and get two more victory points". Sagrada was much more fun with a similar theme, because of the variable scoring rules and the methods to relocate pieces that are already played. Back to Darklight Memento Mori, Mythic Battles Pantheon and Conan. ;)

@zoehou7229

I like abstracts, but I find this one pretty boring / arbitrary (am equally surprised it is #1 abstract on bgg). I'd suggest Go, Blokus (regular or Duo), Photosynthesis (I'm a bit surprised bgg says this is an abstract, but I'll take it), or Patchwork instead. Or just avoid abstracts altogether - that's fine too :)
@KnakuanaRka

If you’re interested in abstract games, drafting, and tile-laying, try Sagrada. It often seems to be brought up as a competitor to this game, and I think it’s a lot more interesting. Try that if Azul feels like doing spreadsheets, as I’ve heard it be described.
@blackjack2150

You might lack the cultural reference. The game seems to be inspired by moroccan ceramics: www.google.com/search?biw=1440&bih=738&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=moroccan+ceramic And the tiles are used in bathrooms, but not also in many other types of rooms and floors in general.
@MrMenegat
7 жыл бұрын
Actually the game is inspired by portuguese ceramics... That's the reason it is called "AZUL", a reference for AZULEJO, portuguese word for ceramic. But they are used in bathrooms the same way LOL
@EightThreeEight
6 жыл бұрын
I think it's meant to be pronounced "Athul". Azul is the Spanish word for Blue.
@Almeida0003
6 жыл бұрын
Nope. The game's name is not from the Spanish word for blue, but from the Portuguese word "Azul" of the same meaning, which is NOT pronounced "Athul", but more like "uh-zool". Also, "Azulejo" is also not said with a Spanish "j", but more like the softer French "j" in "je".

Azulejo = tile in Portuguese. Azul = blue. They abbreviated the word to baptise this game, an unfortunate decision in my opinion.
