The Ty Lee betrayal always catches people by surprise, but in repeat viewings you realize that ever since the moment Azula "recruits" her, it's kind of a hostage situation. In the beach episode she talks about how she attracts boys and keeps them on the hook by smiling politely and giving empty praise, and I think she was doing that with Azula to some extent as well, as a survival method. The moment she saw an out, thanks to Mai betraying them first, she took the chance to get out of there.

Exactly. Ty Lee joined Azula because she knew Azula would return to the circus every night, escalating things until someone was seriously injured or killed. By joining her, Ty Lee was protecting her fellow performers, animals, and herself. She's too good-natured to stand by when she can make a difference. While it's implied that Mai joined out of boredom, Zuko is mentioned early on, suggesting her true motive was more personal.

One of the most epic surprises of season 3, the true price of leading by fear.

I have been quoting "Thats rough buddy" ever since this episode released 😂😂 this is also one of my favorite 2-part episodes in the whole series, because of what you said. These two guys were the first fight we ever saw on the show and now they're like the best duo. ohh and Azula being epically betrayed by her 2 best friends! 😂😂

I’ve REALLY enjoyed you sharing this show with Cara. It doesn’t happen enough where people who have already experienced the ATLA journey does it again showing someone else, I love it! You two are great, and I love how Prez only remembers like half of it too, bc it’s half new, half he knows what’s coming, and he’s done such a great job not spoiling things for you! Best show ever!!

One cool detail you can see how zuko built up a little bit of a resistance to cold climates because first Iroh “remember your breath of fire to keep you warm.” Second he was absolutely way colder swimming in freezing water.

Don't know if this was already commented, but ever since Zuko learnt the true firebending from the masters, he no longer yells or shouts when he firebends. Absolutely crazy detail from the producers and animators, this show is one of a kind.

There is a plausible fan theory that the Avatar world is smaller (evidenced by how close the north and south pole are together). Because the world is smaller than Earth, gravity is lighter. That's why big people can be thrown around and how characters can jump really high and far. Also notice that Zuko's fire bending sounds a bit like a roaring dragon and he doesn't grunt when shooting fire like he did before meeting the Firebending Masters

I attributed the “big people being thrown around” to the fact that literal superpowers exist.

@@austinseaman1913 Aang and the gang did not fly in a straight line and they made a lot of stops. The Fire Nation got a whole fleet to the north pole pretty fast. In Legend of Korra, ships can move between the north and south pole pretty fast.

In this episode they show us how firebenders got to the air temples. Sozins comet make their firebending very strong and they all fly like Azula with their fire (in the normal situation only the strongest firebenders can do this)

"I love Zuko more than I fear you" Azula always saw Zuko as getting the affection of everyone, even her own mother, while she was only feared. Hearing her childhood friend basically tell her what she's always thought definitely got under her skin.
@judeless77

That’s not true. Zuko didn’t get any affection because he didn’t have any friends. His mother loved both of them it was just that Zuko was not as cruel. After he was banished Azula got all the attention from her friends and her father. Yeah, she’s a tyrant but she received a lot of praise from the rest of the fire nation.

Becoming a good guy always nerfs the bad guys. Mai and Ty Lee had no trouble taking out groups of earth benders, the Kyoshi Warriors, and even these guards. Suddenly after taking out Azula, the only threat on the island, they let themselves be captured.

That’s one interesting opinion. You should read the books because you might have a different opinion. They made the characters a bit nicer because the cartoon was going to be shown on Nickelodeon and they wanted to instill positive messages to children… but the books were different.

I’ve seen other comments that state Azula was in her lightning bending stance when facing Mai so it’s definitely possible she was going to permanently eliminate her and Ty Lee knew it which is why she stopped her. But idk 🤷🏽♂️

More important, what is the taste of this pink Monster? I haven't saw it yet. (Maybe bubblegum or cherryflower?). Since we have pretty much the same tastes, from what I've seen, I'm hightly interested. 😊 And of course, those episodes are legendary. "that's routh buddy", "you've miscalculated, I love Zukko more than I fear you" are along the best quote ever.

Never liked the word "betrayal" for the situation with Mai and Ty Lee. Ty Lee in fact was scared into obedience with threats and May joined in for Zuko, but we still see that Asula is oppressing her in the course of the show (like that time with her little brother). So do you really believe they were loyal and faithful out of free will? Because otherwise that's not betrayal, that's breakout from the claws of the tyrant.
