To chime in, an app image video would be fantastic! With respect to availability sets vs availability zones for AVD, other than the minimal costs associated with interzone traffic, why wouldn't everyone just use availability zones instead of sets? If one uses availability zones, then multiple fault and update domains are automatically included. I don't really understand the use case for availability sets - is the only advantage the minimal costs savings vs AZs?

Yes cost is a factor, but the main difference is the type of HA. Sets spread the load over multiple servers and racks but Zones, even though there are multiple data centers in a zone…technically you MIGHT end up with all your servers in the same data center building and even on the same rack. The chances of this are small, but it is possible. Just like it is possible in sets to have the load divided over 3 racks and then you lose power to that data center building…either way…the risk is small Finally it comes down to the services you want to use…are they all available in zones? Do what is best for your environment

@@AzureAcademy I'm confused. How could it be possible, when enabling the availability zones option at the host pool level (as you explained in your other video), could the individual host pool VMs end up in the same DC and perhaps even the same rack? I would have thought that enabling the availability zone option at the host pool level would guarantee that would NOT happen...

VM placement in a SET or ZONE comes down to space...which datacenter building or rack has the room for a VM or multiple VMs of the size you want. the less capacity in a zone, datacenter or rack will mean that your VMs MIGHT end up in the same area. Now to some extent this was ALWAYS unavoidable. In SETs if you pick 3 fault domains but you have 30 VMs in your SET then 10 of them will be in EACH fault domain. in ZONEs If you pick 3 ZONEs 10 of your VMs will be in EACH ZONE...and you will NOT know which data center buildings in ZONE 1 your VMs land on...and it MIGHT be all the same data center. so this is a numbers game...the more zones or fault domains you use the higher the chance that any impact to the physical infrastructure will have a zero or small impact to you...that is how HA works. does that make sense?

@@AzureAcademy Perhaps a simple use case will help me to better understand... Suppose I decide to deploy 3 new AVD hosts to an existing pool and I further decide to use availability zones. So, I use the add hosts wizard, like you did in your video, and I specify that I want the three new host VMs to be created with respect to availability zones 1, 2, and 3 in a given region that supports AZs. In that use case, are you saying that, despite selecting three availability zones, the VMs could potentially be colocated within a single availability zone, perhaps even a single rack in a given DC? If so, how is that high availability? It's more like, "we'll try to give you HA"

NO, What I am saying is that if you select Zone 1,2,3 that inside Zone 2 your VMs MIGHT all end up in the same data center building...and in a rare possibility all on the same server rack. This is all dependent upon Data Center capacity at the time you build. Also Azure will move things around to run things more efficiently and your workload COULD end up moving to another Data Center or Rack with in Zone 2...but it will NEVER move Outside Zone 2...the same thing applies to zone 1 and 3 does that help?
