Inventions like these are rarely for the products themselves, guys. This is a great project for practice, it's good experience and she can show employers. She's a fuckin first year student not an entrepreneur or engineer. Yes it's a simple invention but it's unique (for now) and that shows that she's good at innovation. I think she did a great job with it, that would be a fun project to work on. She'll probably just collect a few awards and move on.

She's got a bright future ahead of her. This invention seems like practice before something bigger and better. If there was a way to mass produce her human heat powered flashlight and make it shine brighter, I can see her cashing out nicely if she can partner up with a reputable company. I think with the momentum she's going at right now, she's bound to invent something truly life changing, hell it might even be the thing she refuses to mention to the newscaster. Who knows? We shall see!

I agree with her on that comment about being an entrepreneur isn't simply business related. An entrepreneur is a kind of person type, a king of business spirit, who's efforts either reinvigorate an old sector of a market or create a new market and/or renders once-popular markets irrelevant...like the typewriter. And that flashlight idea...winner! I think that's a great idea!

More luck than talent! (also youth and beauty) Dear CBC: There are thousands of very hard working, very talented inventors who are not receiving the media attention that they should. Please look beyond the lucky few and report on the unlucky many who are working just as hard (if not harder) and getting no attention!!! PS. Yes I know you will never report on these folks because their stories are usually not glamorous and emotionally charged as this story, and thus you will not be able to get the ratings that you are looking for. Sad how money is so corrupting!

Brian McConkey I sought of agree, I think her publicity is deserved but I think more inventors should get recognition, do you have any inventors you know about? I think more media caught on to her because she won the google science fair, which is big. So that’s the reason why, more inventors need to enter those type of stuff

this is the exact principle used for the self-refilling scam mug but in reverse to condense water. I wonder if it would work better with the circuitry along the sides or higher up.

Where you can boil water you usually can plug in. I think it might be good up camping, heat the water, coco or coffee on the fire, than poor it into the cup. If electric were out heat up some coffee on the grill outside.

I do not see any invention just some innovation. I'm sure that there are at least a few thousand of people that had a similar idea just realized is not very useful or maybe they even build something similar for fun. The amount of energy in a hot drink (mostly water say 250g) about 0.29Wh/ degree Celsius delta. Of course most of the energy will not go trough the seebeck element and from that only at best 5% (efficiency of a seebeck module) will be converted in to electricity. So say 20% of that energy will go trough the module the rest will escape from the top and from that 5% is converted in to electricity. Also assume that coffee or tea is hot 60C and ambient is 20C so 40C delta. Total energy in that 250g cup at 40C delta 11.6Wh from that 20% only will probably pass trough the seebeck module so 2.32Wh and from that 5% converted to electricity so 116mWh. Most phones will require at least a 500mA charging current (0.5A x 5V = 2.5W) and all that energy 0.116Wh will be good for around 2 minute charge. All this are a bit optimist was just a short analysis. I like her and is cool that she is interested in this. Attracting international attention !!!

I'm an engineering student and your attitude is literally the worst part about STEM culture. Just because a woman, or anyone, is doing better than you, it doesn't mean you have to get all envious and mean. People like you are the reason we don't have more women in engineering.
