I believe, every door is a personal memory of Bluebeard, and Judith wants to know all of his past. Three wifes mean: One wife when he was young (morning), the second when he was in his mid-age (midday), the third when he became elder (afternoon). Now he's old and Judith is the one who shares with him the darkness, the infinity of death... For me, this short opera-masterpiece is a journey through time.

The slight jerkiness of that last, long push on Bluebeard's unblinking face was something I never knew I needed - it was the perfect cap on a deeply unsettling production. It was also interesting how Leslie Megahey and Elizabeth Lawrence made Judith's appearance seem to change from moment to moment. She's obviously a beautiful woman, but there are times when the angle and the shadows take her from breathtaking to almost grotesque and then back to normal all within the same shot - it was a brilliant way to further play with the idea that perhaps things in this story are not what they seem. A fantastic film adaptation of an already fantastic opera.

Yes indeed, Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle is wonderful, isn't it? My first Opera was Rigoletto by Verdi, some 54 years ago. Wonderful experience. It made a huge impact on me. Likewise Verdi's La Traviata, and Puccini's Madame Butterfly. Boris Godunov is another wonderful work. Enjoy! Warning: not all operas are as wonderful as these! There are still a few that make me wonder why they are still in the repertoire. Welcome to the world of Opera!

@@vienna227 I think one of the things that makes it accessible as a work (the short length) ironically makes it a little difficult to produce. You really need to pair it with something else to make a full evening, which means either doing an orchestral first half or another one-act opera. Going with the orchestral first half is the easier option, but it usually necessitates doing the opera "in concert," which means it will be at best semi-staged with almost no set and the orchestra on stage with the singers. This breaks the work's sense of claustrophobia, and it's harder to get truly immersed in the drama. Trying to do another one-act runs into a bunch of other logistical concerns, one of which is casting. With only two singers carrying the entire hour-long Blueceard's Castle, your other one-act would need to be something which those singers could either sit out of or sing only minor roles in, meaning you'd need to hire an additional couple headliners. Most other one-acts tend to be scored for much smaller orchestras, so you'd have a bunch of players that you'd only need for half the evening (which happens, but usually not to this extent). Finally, you have the problem of how to order the operas: do you start with something light/funny like a Gianni Schicchi and then brutalize the audience with Bluebeard's Castle, or do you do BlueBeard's Castle first and then shatter the mood with a clown car like Schicchi (which is a perfect opera in its own right, don't get me wrong)? And all of this is before you even get into the fact that it's in a non-standard operatic language (Hungarian) that most singers don't want to deal with. It's unjust that such a great work doesn't get as much play as it deserves, but I can also see the reasons why.

A masterpiece about the depths and secrets of men's soul. This version is not the best i've heard, but with the visualisation and acting it's quite shocking. Becuse of the strong accent on the original lyrics - which gives some weird pale comedy overtone to this heavy piece - it sounds to me like an exotic drama taken place far away. A far away that actually points to the semi-alienated subconscious dark.

Great performances by Robert Lloyd and Elizabeth Lawrence. And wonderfully conducted by Adam Fischer. But I had a hard time wrapping my head around this production. Bluebeard seems so calm and sure of himself here. Personally, I think he’s a severely tortured soul who doesn’t know why he does the crazy things he does. And that certainly comes across in Bartok’s score. But, for some reason, the director chose to repress that.
@sebastianmelmoth685
2 жыл бұрын
Not so sure about this. I have always found that the score portrays him more as a demented soul than a tormented one. And like most twisted souls, they have waded so far in sin... that sin will pluck on sin. When you have done so much evil, it is not a torment but a weird and twisted delight, which is why he always asks Judith, "Are you afraid?" It is not out of concern... but glee.

I have avoided Bartok and his atonal music - thinking it would be modern pots and pans music - but it is not. It is just on the cusp, still musical and understandable - like an impressionist painting, before they became too abstract and meaningless, unless they were explained to you and even then a lot of what was said was unbelievable. Music should be enjoyable and stir emotion - not be so cerebral and 'clever' as to be meaningless. Like Tracey Emin's unmade bed was not art. Bartok was at the cliff's edge, but not over it. This was really enjoyable ! Mysterious and hypnotic and the music fitted it perfectly from beginning to end.

I would like to point out some scenography errors: in the opera's libretto the three previous wives are not self-propelled mannequins in their niche!... They are alive and they enter the scene majestically one after the other (Bluebeard had not killed them!). Looking at them, Judith says: "élnek, élnek, itten élnek!" ("they are alive, they are living here!"). And then: why is the torture chamber a kind of empty bathroom??... While instead the treasure room is beautiful and sumptuous as it must be.
@juliaboon9741
5 жыл бұрын
Marina Caracciolo firstly. Yes. The bathroom does look strange but if you pay attention there are tools on the tiled bench that look like torture tools. Second. The wives are alive. They are kept there to live “forever” with some kind of magic which isn’t fully explained. Judith says here also that “they are alive.” They move when she says this. She is shocked because she thought that they were dead. The wives actually move often in the scene if you watch carefully enough and this is clear when Judith joins them. She isn’t “murdered” she just steps into place and becomes part of the room.
@marinacaracciolo3161
5 жыл бұрын
Julia Boon. Thanks for the right details. But I think, however, that the solution provided by the libretto of the work for the final scene is the most suggestive: the three ex-wives, who unexpectedly come on stage one after the other from the seventh door, come from the past of Bluebeard, and are evoked by his memory so as to become visible and "still alive" before Judith's eyes: all three still magnificent, still very much loved... Then they leave, followed by Judith, who is forced like them to enter in "an eternal night", that is, like them, to go out forever from the life of the unhappy Bluebeard. You can see for example on KZitem the beautiful version of Jean Pierre Ponnelle with Solti/ Sass/Kovats. But every director has his own personal and appreciable stage inventions!...

@@marinacaracciolo3161 Just thought, i might plopp down my opinon here, thats what the commentary section is here for, after all. There are many ways to realise an opera (and i'm by no means an expert in that, quite the contrary actually). The realisation in this version i found quite appealing. I personally liked the torture chamber (bit weird to write that out) with the blood coming out of the walls (although not in all shots, i'd generally have wished for some more consistency in scenery and costume) but else a quite sterile feel to it. The scenery wich i probably like the most, was the lake of tears, with the Lands of Bluebeard close behind (loved the mist flowing over the rock, got my imagination going). The last room i haden't really a problem with, but the realisation suggested in the libretto certainly underlines the 'majesticness' and 'aliveness' (sorry, not a native english speaker) of the previous wives. i'd be okay with either, i think. But all in all, i liked the realisation, i liked the acting (of Lloyd especially) and i love this opera.
