In the 60s I used to shoot a Webly MK3 over a farm in Gloustershire, it was a lovely gun, accurate and made short work of rabbits.

The best Airsporters were the mk1 and mk2. These had a conical piston head and a self opening loading tap. From the mk3 the piston was flat, the loading tap was no longer a tapered air tight fit as it was cylindrical. I have one of the very first mk1 Airsporters made. This was confirmed by Mr John Knibbs. It is not in the nice condition yours is but it shoots a nice 10.8 ft lbs with 5.6 cal Marksman pellets and, contrary to popular belief, is very accurate. The Airsporter and the Webley mk3 were both cheapened but the BSA more so. Thank you for a great video. Your Airsporter needs the correct foresight cover which resembles a train carriage.

Sorry have to correct Mk 1 BSA Airsporter stocks were built from Walnut or Birch depending on year I know of no MK one stocks built from beech. The deluxe stocks on the Mk 1 often featured quite lush walnut.I have been lucky enough to own several which I was able to sell on through Kempton Park M+A fair when downsizing my collection. A contender for the best underlever airgun of this period was the Falke 80/90 based on the same prewar gun that spawned the airsporter, but was not hindered by the conical piston head and so was more powerful ironically the MK1 Meteor was a more powerful and more consistent air rifle than the airsporter,. A fact I find fascinating that a cheap tin plate airgun could hold it's head up with the big boys. Both the MK3 and the Airsporter as I am sure you know came out of Germany at the end of WW2 as reparations whilst BSA made some considerable effort to rework the design and make it their own Webley managed to swap the tap from right to left and make a balls up of Diana's two stage trigger, that said the MK3 and the Diana that spawned it were along with the Airsporter the very pinnacle of the Lincoln Jeffries pattern underlevers at least from looks as for function one must look else where. From a build point of view most collectors concur the MK3and 4 Airsporter were the best made , well balanced solid build quality and topped with the best sights ever fitted to the mark also more consistent in operation, but still hampered by the conical piston head and the gentlemans agreement..

Hi Paul, I’m enjoying your videos & I’ve learned a lot about Webley MK3’s which I have 5 of, I did not know about the removal of the hashing on the cocking lever and loading tap as the models went on, as well as a couple of other points that you mentioned in your video, I hope I can return some of my knowledge back to you, I am a huge fan of the BSA Airsporter, you mentioned in this video that the G prefix was to identify the rifle as a Mk1, The G prefix is actually to identify the rifle as a .22 and the 177 had an E prefix to identify them, Both Were MK1’s. As with the Webley’s they went to series 1,2,3,4 etc, BSA used a letter configuration to identify the series ie ….. G, GA GB ect for the .22 & E, EA, ect for the 177 models……. Keep up the good work with your videos 👍😊
