Designed right after WW2, the prototype was under construction in the late '40s, and it first flew in 1952. It was designed and built closer in time to the Wright Brothers flight at Kitty Hawk than to today.

No one has designed or built anything even close to the B-52. Even the newer B-1-B & B-2 bombers which are faster and more stealthy don't carry as much bomb/fuel weight. But the weapons today are more lethal and accurate. I don't think we have the old massive dumb ground bombs left over from the Vietnam era. We used them up in the first gulf war. Let's see how much further we can run the BUFF. (70 years old)

Thanks. I was in an ADC Fighter Squadron,on a B52 Bomber SAC Air Force Base in the early 1960s. I saw these B52s take off and land everyday. It was an awesome experience to see them takeoff with their 8 Jet Engines. I will always remember them sideslipping when landing on a very windy (crosswind) day.Mmmmmmmm

With the old, old, OLD J-57 engines. These H models are much more capable in all respects thanks to the TF-33 engines on them, and of course as you mentioned, they put out much, much less smoke too. A minimum interval T/O back then with D, E, F or G models made the runway environment go IFR because of the smoke. Truly very impressive to see!

Ironic that someone would take a cheap shot at the US over the iconic B-52 exhaust. That 60 year old aircraft has been carrying that big stick of the USA forever. Also projecting power around the world and protecting NATO along the way. The USA won't apologize. Maybe Volkswagon should apologize for conspiring to fudge the numbers for years on diesel emissions on millions of their new cars around the world. Don't despair all you tree huggers the B-52 will soon be fitted with new high by pass engines.

How about Africa using some of their diamonds, gold and other resources to pay for their own fucking water and vaccinations? They could also spend a few bucks on birth control and solve a bunch of their problems. Freedom isn't free, numbnuts.
