Forget walking the circle. This is not nearly as important a feature as many, many teachers, feel it is. What is most combat effective within Pa Kua Ch'ang is the Shuai Jiao. Circle walking may very well be a distraction from what is useful. Old teachers often kept a great deal of their arts secret, even from their best students. Many old teachers, during the Ch'ing Dynasty, added superfluous movements to their techniques, and made subtle changes to disguise what worked in order to protect their art from being stolen by people spying upon them. Unless you are given the key to understand an art, just practicing it, may take you many years to understand it. There are thousands of "masters" who earned their degree in a few years, or because they bought a black belt at a less than reputable school, and who feel they are authority figures in their given art. Thus muddying the waters of real skills. Many, many people, practice martial arts for years, but time alone does not bring skill. The state of affaires in the martial arts today in both mainland China and the USA is disturbing. MMA is not the be all and end all of martial arts, using it as a measuring stick to compare other arts with is a mistake. Real kung fu is rare. But it can be obtained by dedicated training and perseverance, even so it is still very rare. High level skill, like gold, can be acquired, but the student must sacrifice and dig deep within himself to find it. Even so he will still need good fortune to develop kung fu. Remember this one thing, "the man makes the art." All the best. Laoshr #60 Ching Yi Kung Fu Association

There's a reason why "Kung Fu" is another way of saying "Skill attained through work; time, energy & effort". Not "fortune". To say fortune is needed is an insult & disregard, ignorance to the incredible amount of time, energy & effort required to reach TRUE KUNG FU. Which is what recent generations lack & lost due to modernization. If you can think of what it takes for Kung Fu, then you don't know Kung Fu. Before there was no need to use 2 terms but nowadays "Kung Fu" & "Real Kung Fu" are used because that which made it what it was is close, if not already, to extinction.

@@mariobrena5081 Hands coordinate with the feet, elbows coordinate with the knees, and the hips coordinate with shoulders. The feet are water and the hands fire. And it is in man that heaven and earth join as one. Walking the circle has great chi-kung benefit, that's a fact. Walking the circle also offers the alert student a chance to study entering at an angle. It is however a terrible idea to walk the circle in a fight. Walking the circle is dynamic meditation with all its benefits.

@PaMuShin After fifty years there is nothing new for me to discover about walking the circle. But if you like "busy work" have at it. Boxers DO circle their opponents, but thats a sport. The sports designed that way. Real combat hardly gives one any chance at getting into a "ready position". I don't expect many to agree with me, but healthy discussion is good for the art, if you're honest with yourself, but few men are free of their delusions. You meditate on this. Circles grow smaller as skills develop. Large circles grow smaller, small circles grow smaller still, the smallest circle pivots on a dime, until there is stillness. Perhaps you overlooked the last thing I wrote. It is the most important thing. The man makes the art.

All martial arts are good, yet they mostly only work when engaging an opponent in a similar style. But when factoring in wrestling and judo, then winning a fight becomes a real challenge, even impossible depending on the wrestler.

all martial arts is best against an amateur LOL physics is the thing... and this style seems cool like the silly moving sparring yet you could see some powerful dynamics... like even weightlifting is also technique... like the one move clean with like 20kg if you do it, it's like the initial acceleration from the thighs actually launches it and the other two sections flow.... I like tai chi, aikido etc. but two views to it, a good fighter could win a fight with it and a less physical fighter maybe able to do enough to avoid a fight with it....

O passado ficou no passado. O futuro muda tudo .

Partly right... In this video, most of what is shown is a) Modern Wushu baguazhang b) Chinese movies scenes. In other words, it focuses on aesthetics. So, yeah, it is a dance, here. And indeed, bagua zhang forms are really nice to watch. However, it can also become a very efficient fighting art, when coupled with other martial arts (wrestling, luohan quan). It was actually the art of imperial guards in the 19th century.

@@baptistegaussen4784 A true accomplished Ba Gua master doesn't need to couple it with any other style to be effective and victorious. He just needs to have achieved a really good level of the art. I really pity these typical patronizing arrogant Western BS commentaries (like John-dd6qh) that internal styles are "a dance", useless, and similar crap like that. Lads like him have been brainwashed by too many MMA shows into believing that this is all the reality of martial arts. Octagons and MMA fights are as real fights as reality Big Brother shows are to real life. True masters of any style (but especially so of internal styles) not only do not care about fame but in fact try to avoid exposure as much as possible. Like most active tier 1 special forces or top field spy agents, they try to remain as anonymous as possible. However, up to the early 20th century, there were in China public tournaments of real fights open to all styles. And unlike today's MMA shows, those tournaments had no body parts off limits when fighting. And guess what? There were a number of masters who fought using internal styles and won. The thing is that such true masters are quite rare, but they do exist. Personally, I had the chance to meet one of such men. I confess that I also arrived with a bit of that skeptical cocky attitude and had a brief exchange with the master where he used a tiny (just a tiny bit of his energy on my arms). He didn't have to use much. His Chi, (not the strength of his muscles) was real enough to convince me of the reality of what many Westerners today (before the Internet they were more humble) dismiss as a "fantasy".
