Curious question since you are a dance teacher. What happens if you have a child who is very small but also at the age range. Maybe a dancer who has had restricted growth or some issue with growth so is very small but is at ten or eleven? I am just curious how kids like that are handled. What does it take for a small child to safely dance en pointe? I love ballet but also support the common sense of protecting little kids from long term bone damage. A child not ready can risk arthritis and other painful foot issues in later life I’m sure, right? I know they have to be strong but also developed enough. Just curious what your criteria are as a teacher.

Oooof 10? 😬 none of the dance studios/schools I attended…not even the dance apparel store I worked at would allow people under the age of 12 to start or be fit to go up en full pointe. The bones and ligaments in their feet just simply aren’t ready for that and permanent damage can and (probably will) be done especially if baby girl falls 🫣 it’s okay to wait a couple years Edit: bro okay, the toe pads don’t even fit her quite right…too big for her tinty feet😥 that’s a sign it’s not quite time yet.

Hoping this is specifically for a photoshoot, and not her actually fitted into shoes at this age. Unless she looks significantly younger than she really is, her body is still growing so much that pointe could damage her bone structure. She may have fantastically strong feet and ankles, but your bones need to be more developed to really go en pointe. She also would likely grow out of the shoes well before they were dead, so it would be very expensive to keep replacing the pointe shoes as her feet continue to grow. For anyone that wasn't aware, you DO NOT EVER, FOR ANY REASON, fit the pointe shoes with "room to grow". You fit the shoe to the foot as it is at the time of the fitting. Pointe shoes aren't cheap. Yes, she looks like she's got good technique, but again, if it's not just for a photoshoot, perfect technique can't fix an underdeveloped dancer going en pointe so young

This is why at my ballet school they allow you to go on point when you are in ballet 4. “Because that’s when your bones start to lose their developing, so it’s makes it safer. It doesn’t matter if you have flexibility or not. And if you’re 10 turning getting to ballet 4, you will not be allowed on point so you will stay in your ballet level until your 12.”-My ballet school. Edit: I’m in my second year of ballet three so next year I’m going to ballet 4 and if your questioning, I’m in the age group of getting point shoes but until ballet 2 your hold back for other year to improve from the year before that. So that also explains why I’m in my second year of ballet 3.
