A guy told a story here on KZitem about destroying a beaver dam. He had taken it down twice, trying to get the beavers to move away. The third time he walked down the path to the creek, the beavers had built a dam across the path.

The reason why sounds of rain or running faucets causes Nibby to go into dam-building mode is because that's the biological 'trigger', if you will. The sound alone of running water drives beavers to construct dams. Even if it's an electronic speaker just playing the sound of running water, beavers will cover it with sticks and mud until the sound is suppressed enough.

Once, as a teenager I was snorkeling in a river near home and a small beaver swam right up to my face mask and seemed quite curious about my intrusion. It startled me at first, but was clearly not a threat like a protective momma might have been.

you were probably the first human it had ever seen to be fair... some young animals are quite curious ha I've had numerous quote on quote "first encounters"... real cool story is my first "intro into wilderness" (went to college in Alaska for outdoor studies)... but we were in the talkeetna mountain range.. and some young caribou would follow us rather closely for hours (instructor told me,,, they do that when they first see a human)... also when I was sea kayaking thru prince William sound on another college expedition. this freaking lil seal legit followed us from the beginning of the trip to the end.. 18 days and like 240 nautical miles... we all felt so sad leaving him at our pullout harbour... he was still in the cove, just watching us as we loaded the kayaks and gear up. welp lol but anyway animals are amazing!!!

It's not a question of age - beavers can be very aggressive in the wild regardless of gender or age, especially underwater. Remember that their teeth have evolved for chewing through trees - your diving equipment or skin is not going to present nearly so much resistance as tough tree bark.

@@ericconnor8419 The sound or sensation of running water is all it takes to trigger them into building mode. Somewhat like the pre programmed shape that cats respond to when they see a cucumber and jump like they just grabbed a live electrical wire. They probably evolved to perceive snakes as dangerous through this instinctive response just as beavers evolved to evade predators by creating flooded areas in which they can move undetected beneath the water.

If we hadn’t killed off all the wild beaver our rivers and lakes wouldn’t be in such a mess. They make dams which last awhile and ponds form, when the dams give way they leave the soil enriched with nutrients . While the dams hold the water back aquatic life flourishes all kinds of species reproduce in larger numbers, it’s an amazing cycle that we humans have interfered with and buggered up royally. Shame on our greedy selves.

Decades ago researchers figured out that a beaver's dam-building instinct is triggered by the sound of running water. Maybe because they don't have very good vision. The beavers in the experiment ignored silent water flowing from a pipe in favor of speakers playing the sound of running water. So it's nothing sad it's just normal behavior.
