I initially tried carrying Ella in a sling, however, it exacerbated my back problems. I looked online for information and found almost nothing. I did stumble across NewZealand’s Attitude Live program and was able to grab screen shots from two of their videos that showed disabled parents. Based on this I constructed two of my own baby carriers.
I took a used baby bouncer and used a vice and a wrench or spanner (depending on where you are from) to bend the metal so that it curved down and could be attached to my chair. As I used a strap across the front of my folding chair instead of hangers and a footplate, I just drilled a hole in the plastic receiver and slid it in. When I got my own rigid chair I attached an old wheel lock tube down the front of the wheelchair which accomplished the same thing.
If you are looking to create a similar thing, I recommend that you get the simplest baby bouncer you can find. You want one with very straight runs in the metal tubing so it will be easier to bend and won’t bang into your wheels or your body.
Since I created mine I have found another story online of a Canadian man who had one made for him.
How did you carry your kids?
