So during our evening game drive in Ndutu Plains in Ngorongoro Tanzania we spotted a Cheetah mom of 4cubs (2months old) taking an evening walk and by look of things, mom was looking for some snack for the cubs.
She looked around for an hour without any success and it was beginning to get dark and they looked like they were settling in for the night, but then something funny happened, an opportunity presented itself right in front of the Cheetahs in about 100 yards next to them, a Baby Gazelle stood up and was walking around possibly looking for mom.
It was a calving season for the gazelles and there were a lot of females having their babies hiding in the grass as the moms are out there grazing and of course they will get back to their babies hiding places every now and then to nurse them.
Moms lick babies genital areas to stimulate them to pee and poop and moms eat the baby poop and drink their urine to get rid of any possible scent that may give the babies out to predators, also during the first month of their lives baby gazelles don’t have scent glands this helps them to stay out of danger of being sniffed by predators during the month hiding stage for the babies.
And babies don’t move until moms get back and call them, so for this one to be moving around that was a little awkward, perhaps he was just trying to be adventurous and hoped to find mom because he was so thirsty, may be, but it didn’t go well with him, because as soon as Mom Cheetah saw him she stalked him and brought him to her babies to get hunting lessons like the Cub in the clip trying to find a way to kill the baby gazelle then other Cubs joined in for a try but since they were too young (2 months) they did their best and mom had to finish it. Normally by 6-8 months is when the Cubs learn hunting skills but for these guys life happened a little too quick for them.
