Fetal movements can be anything from a flutter, kick, swish or roll; and feeling your baby move is a sign that they are well. If you notice any changes to your baby's movements, it could be a sign that your baby isn't well.
Here's advice about how your baby should feel and move during pregnancy:
- you should feel your baby move from around 16 to 24 weeks, and then right up to and during labour.
- every baby is different - there's no set number of movements you need to feel.
- the important thing is to get to know how your baby moves day to day.
- rust your instincts - it's always best to make sure everything's ok.
If you notice that your baby's movements have slowed down, changed or stopped, contact your maternity unit immediately. This could save your baby’s life. There are staff on the maternity unit 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
