This was classic blues ahead its time over WLAC, Nashville, that we dig at night time in the distant Costa Rica in the first half of the 1960s. Kind of our soundtrack of life. Thank you Jimmy.😺

Jimmy Reed could find notes, sounds, and bends on that harmonica that no one else ever could! That was a genius...
@jjryan1352

Eh? Those are all common notes, sounds and bends in blues harmonica. But he has a uniquely identifiable laid-back style I haven't heard from anyone else and he was one of the first to really work in the high notes, which many players avoid.

In 1968, when I was twelve, my mom bought a couple of LPs from the bargain bin at the grocery store. One of them was "I'm Jimmy Reed." I listened to it over and over wondering why it wasn't on the radio. Yup years later here I am with all these guitars , bass guitars and amps and still digging Jimmy Reed.

Sometimes his songs were on the radio in DC metro. I think maybe only on the colored station. DC had one all-colored station and Baltimore had one, which couldn't be heard in DC. The other stations were mixed.

When I was in the Navy back in the 60's in Charleston SC, Jimmy was a huge star. Not so in my backward Ohio. They wouldn't play black artists hardly at all. How sad... Glad that this white kid was educated while in the Navy in the South!

My professional band (1962 in Toronto, Canada) backed Jimmy for a weekend at an after hours club called Frankie's Cocacabana Lounge. On the 2nd night, in the middle of "Big Boss Man", he just stopped and fell straight standing up of the 3 ft. elevated stage onto the dance floor. That was it for the gig but not before getting to hear one of main blues heroes do the Jimmy. Mama sitting beside him onstage, singing harmony and helping him remember his lyrics! And man, was he plastered! But boy, I'll tell you, he was the pure D thing!

Hi John. I’m reading Keith Richards’ book and of course he makes mention of JR. He says “he was always pissed out of his mind.” That’s the Brit phrase for fall-down drunk. Evidently he couldn’t hold his liquor well. I wonder why he drank so much if he knew he’d be vomiting all over the place later. I’ll never figure it out. Your account falls right in line with how Keef recollects his memories of JR. He and Jones went absolute nuts for this guy, and others of the day. Wanted to say hello and thank you for that story!

n 1959, I was a fifteen year old kid living in rural Mississippi. One night I stumbled on a radio station, WSM in Nashville, which played mostly blues (yes, Nashville), Delta and others. When I heard this song by Jimmy Reed, I fell in love with the Blues. It was the first song of his that I listened to. He was, and still is, my favorite blues singer, although I have learned to love other musicians, especially the legends of the Miss. Delta, as well as the Chicago blues men. But Jimmy is special to me. He gave me a love of great music, and I am thankful for that.
