Ivanova had a life that hardened her and closed her from trusting someone.....her father who did not love her coping with the death of his wife from a telepathy-inhibiting drug and the death of her brother which promted him to disapprove of his daughters decision to join Earth Forces. Ivanova's former lover ended up being a xenophobe, Talia as a telepath died as a personality since she was experimented on to serve as an unwitting sleeper agent. She handled many years of stress like rebellion against earth. This left her internall vulnerable and she shielded herself against emotions entirely. This is very human.....not everybody deals with emotions this way.

I was so sorry when Marcus killed himself to save Ivanova...he might have been my favourite human character. But, it was SO incredibly noble and so 'Marcus' - it was also a perfect ending for him. And the scene above where Ivanova cries for her loss/his death...what a wonderfully written and astoundingly acted scene. Claudia Christian was SO perfect in it. It was almost like all the emotion her character could not show on the show up until then was channeled into this one scene. Yet she still did not go too far...just perfect.

There are two scenes in all of Babylon 5 which appear to be honest and natural and no trace of acting: this one and the one where Ivanova sits Shiva for her father. There's many great scenes in the show, but I don't think, from an acting standpoint, anything else in the series comes close to this. If I ever get to meet Claudia at a convention, I intend to ask her about this performance, and where she had to go in order to do this.

Their story, one of loving without expectation, loving sincerely, genuinely, is one of the most powerful expressions of it, I have seen in sci-fi. In the 90's we had a lot of great science fiction, and I fall back to the Deep Space Nine/Babylon 5 era. Their stories were that good. This one, is at the very top of that list. Bravo for all of the players in these scenes, some are not here anymore, but this here is a testament of what love, should be... Without expectation...and unconditional.

If the Emmys weren't so snobby towards sci-fi/fantasy shows, I'd say Claudia Christian deserved one for her rather heartbreaking talk with Franklin. And it's funny, at Dragon*Con a few years back, Jason mentioned that he found it odd that he was rushing off to do this for Susan, but why the heck did he have to knock all the guards out? JMS has said that he might have kept Jason on the show had he known Claudia wasn't coming back. I ALWAYS wondered why nobody thought to possibly ask as much of the crew as possible to "donate" some of their life to save her, negating having Marcus give up his life entirely. Hmmm....fanfic idea coming up....
@OreadNYC
8 жыл бұрын
+ladycplum I commented on another Babylon 5 video here on KZitem that the Arthurian legends were clearly an influence on several episodes of Babylon 5 (the most obvious, of course, being "A Late Delivery From Avalon"). I think Marcus Cole was another manifestation of this because he embodies many of the characteristics (courage, nobility, intelligence, generosity, etc.) of the quintessential medieval knight all the way up to his chastity, his unrequited love for and faithfulness to Ivanova, and his willingnes to sacrifice his life for hers. The writers even gave him a line in "Late Delivery From Avalon" in which Marcus rather jokingly compares himself to Sir Galahad...but the similarity is actually remarkably apt.

I've never heard that from JMS. The Lurkers Guide has season 4 filming completed before JMS knew that CC was leaving. The only thing that had to be changed was one line in the voiceover about Ivanova taking command of the new ship.

Device was not set up to allow more than 1 "donor" and it works by taking on the illness or injury you're trying to heal. You can't break your neck just a little bit. Believe me, if Franklin and Sheridan had thought that that was possible they wouldn't have banned the thing.
