Director of La La Land, Damien Chazelle cooked up Babylon. A film that very much has the nature of Boogie Nights. Looking at and taking us into this world to explore these characters and what they care about and how their passions effect their lives.
Recently I watched Boogie Nights for the first time, a brilliant Paul Thomas Anderson flick, since it was suggested to me due to my love of Babylon and I was told they're very similar, which, is not incorrect. The similarities are pretty clear, but despite that, for me it never feels like a rip off or copycat. Babylon very much has it's own identity to me and has so much care and love for what it's doing and wears it on it's sleeve.
The world of characters created in this movie pulls you in and simply forces you to care, and with a truly entertaining and interesting story of the introduction of sound in film, the themes of the movie are woven so well into the film, it all connected to me so strongly.
At a time where the landscape of Hollywood seems so scary, with the treatment of artists, we are getting more and more movies closer to products. Of course there will always be an element of that but you know what I mean. I felt now would be a good time to talk about how Babylon expresses it's love of film and is shows how important the expression of art is.
