As a full time professional.misician of 30+ years w/Master of Music degree in classical piano performance and post graduate studies in jazz and commercial music, Baroque Music History was a required course in the master's program. (Albeit I'm not proficient on the harpsichord by the wildest stretch of the imagination. It requires a COMPLETELY different technique/touch than the piano). However, the lady who.taught that class was/is a world class harpsichordist and an excellent teacher)! Needless to say, we learned from the get-go that authentic Baroque music ensembles perform on period instruments (instruments that were used at the time the piece was composed and that the tuning is about 40 cents lower (A 400-he tuning used at the time JS Bach was alive)than the standard tuning of today at A 440

I'm no critic and I have a tin ear, but Brandenburg by this group is just well, I cannot hear enough times, especially the 2nd movement, and in which I like to reference on twitter and tweet a dare to them to tell that the musicians are not boogying down, never missing a note so astounsing to me[a subterfuge way to get more who may not care for the music, but to me, if it ain't Baroque, FIX it] Classics are okay I suppose, some better than others, but Baroque just really and I'm spoiled for Jean-Marie Leclair Opus & No3 is just so wonderful and in the three parts, the 1st is like an appeal to stay around don't go and is about a parting if only temporarily and in a time where trips took forever, no cars, just horse and carts, slow and to hear the music then you needed musicians today is almost miraculous to be able to enjoy this music 100s of years later, and lastly,sorry for writing so much but the 2nd part is like contemplating the soon return trip and what joy then with the last part finally coming together and being together again I mean the words and feelings that flow from that recording brings tears to my eyes to hear it, sometimes. C major I think Opus 7, No3 But in the early 1980s I got from the Smithsonian collection of the original instruments playing the Brandenburg and really was what started a great interest in Baroque. That arose from the music on the radio and I had quickly recorded about a 45 minutes of the record, on cassette and the side 2 announcement I had recorded from the radio on a Sunday where all day any type music was played listener's choice, and some played the Bundist Choir ash trees music, and this recording of Vivaldi and it went:'Zukerman plays with LA Phil and Zeto somebody on harpsichord, but the tape I had recorded and later due to playing so much it began to stretch, but I didn't know the album except for the announcing of side 2 of the record, but by then my phonograph player late 198s and into 1990s had died, cassette player,too. Darn, I'm mixing up 2 stories, sorry but it's really about the Brandenburg I wanted to tell also. and so had no way to play my favorite and I l looked for 20 yrs for what I'd heard, and out of the blue found out it wasn't Antonio Vivaldi but Leclair, and Nardini. found by chance on youtube. I had only a blurb that "Zukerman plays and conducts Vivaldi Baroque with the los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra with Zeto cornio on the Harpsichord , with Leclaire...". and was it, it wasn't Vivaldi I had been membvers of clubs for classical and masterpieces etc, and never found it until serendiptidous heard imagine my excitement, as I had an old music box with a new CD player and old cassette player but my tape I was afraid to play it there for fear of damaging the only tape but after finding it on youtube and the web, it was okay so I played it and recorded from the computer recording player from the room play, and was wonderful to finally find it. But Smithsonian original instruments Collection wholly molly it had Partits sonatas and the 6 Complete Brandeburg and from a so named Aston Magna on original instruments original so I don't know how to compare th3e Brandenburgs from those to the Frieburger group, both are outstanding. I'm not sure there's a venue with Aston Magna available or anything, but Smithsonians musty have archives.. Six concerti of Brandenburg and fully played no interruptions. for turning record over or anything. Eight Sonatas for violin,harpsichord and Basso Continuo Six partitqas for solo harpsichord On records, I had recorded to cassettes back in early 1980s and able to record to a flash drives. Claudio is okay but for my tin ear gotta be Frieburg as it just fits, Claudio I dunno timing is I dunno I'm not good enough to be a critic, but these here I enjoy again no offense to Claudios. My heavens I did not mean to go on so, just very exciting the events around having lost then foundf favorite recordings and discovering I had been listening for the wrong artists without youtube I may never have found it. I joined every music club etc se4arching but unsure what I was even looking for. Thanks for ,listening. for any who did. Oh and the Aston Magna on original instruments it makes a difference in the right talent's hands ya might say. Peace and love to all here, I always learn something I didn't know before, me a talentless non musician who is so moved by the period pieces?? It must've been very exciting back during discovering the things you can do for sound to create music..

This is as the piece would have been performed in Bach's time. Love the woodwinds that are actually made of wood, their delicate sounds. But that natural trumpet is a real SOB to play. The only way to play all the notes of a scale with those brass instruments of the baroque period was to play in the extreme high register, called the "clarino" register. Anton Weidinger designed a keyed trumpet but that was well after the age of these natural trumpets, which use little holes to play the different notes. The baroque era was the golden age of the trumpet and masters of that art kept their secrets closely guarded. They formed guilds and only admitted small numbers of the best trumpeters, who were groomed into the highest paid musicians of their time.

That trumpeter is awesome! The valveless trumpet (note: it is not a "natural" trumpet-the latter can only play the harmonic progression, whereas the instrument he is playing has finger holes to allow some alteration to the natural progression) is without a doubt one of the most devilishly difficult instruments to play well. That this man can so accurately play Bach speaks volumes about his ability and relentless pursuit of perfection. By the way, the rest of the orchestra ain't shabby. Really enjoyed this performance.

I had to play a trumpet similar to this (although in D and therefore longer) for university, and at the time I kept saying "it's like wrestling a bear". This dude's instrument is way shorter and pitched higher - therefore his bear was much more powerful than mine. This guy is an absolute monster! And just look at that embouchure! He plays like it's the easiest thing on earth
@rescue270
2 жыл бұрын
I think it is still considered a natural trumpet in F. The finger holes are tiny vents that permit the natural tones to be played more in tune. The unvented natural trumpet's tones would never be exactly in tune and the vents are an attempt at making minor corrections to natural tuning discrepancies.

@orangejoe204
9 жыл бұрын
That's not merely a "trumpet", it's a valveless natural trumpet, also called a "Baroque trumpet". Has a very characteristic sound for Baroque music, but it predates the valved horn, and thus is EXTREMELY difficult to play fast. The embouchure alone takes years to master, which is why the horn player here is the only guy sitting as still as a rock. He needs to concentrate and avoid moving his head and messing up his embouchure.

I think Johann would cry tears of joy to hear his music played so beautiful and with such love. I imagine him walking in and feeling amazed at how his work survived this long. It is timeless.

Aston Magna in early 1980s Smithsonian collection of Brandenburg played on Original instruments: Albert Fuller, Artistic Director Musicians Jaap Schroder, Stanley Ritchie violin Fortunato Arico and John Hsu, cello and viola da gamba Friedemann Immer trumpet Bernard Krainis, recorder Michel Piguet Oboe and John Solum transverse flute Also 8 Sonatas and solos harpsichord, but was recorder in 1977 on original instruments in Great Barringotn Mas at the Aston Magna Summer Festival And just one offering of the museums attempt to open up the historic offerings and current talent I suppose maybe other museums will do the same for the public, and for the players the musicians themselves. I cannot be more excited when I bought the offerings and every part from the vinyl tpo the descriptions of the programs and the selections, but I did find some prinitng errors on vinyl and in the program, but most won't see the errors, I once after high school operated a copier at the time, a mimeograph machine with green stenciled typed studies and a team of 6 proofreaders and ladies who'd been at a long time former teachers of English Literature and ect, who hated me as I'd find mistakes they missed, and boy they'd get mad at me, and all I could say was I just read it over before stretching the stencil over the ink barrel, cuz it'd be a shame to have to start stencil to finished report and the studies have glaring mistakes, I was just looking after all of you, and they'd buy it, I really didn't want to have to increase my own workload and repeat the job, some of these reports seemed to go on foreverfrom hal inch thick to a full inch thick, and one tiny mistake and well you know, straw broke the camels' back is that it? I like Freiburger's and no, I don't dislike Claudio A' stuff.

This is the first selection of music on the Voyager spacecraft. The first... Four and a half billion years from now, when the sun exhausts its fuel and swells to engulf the earth, this expression will still be out there, traveling four and a half billion years...

I will forever love the build the entire piece to the counterpoint magic that is 1:36 (I am addicted to major 7's being used this way), also just now noticing the cool counterpoint that takes place in 1:52 as the scales in both directions have beautiful clashes (and the interesting presence of a b natural immediately after a bflat [taking place also in the earlier passage with B Flat Major 7 to e minor 7 (with a natural 5th)]), try the notes of the scales together yourself slowly (sure the perfect fifth of c and g is a bit odd but the rest has quite special stuff). This is an example of one reason I love music from this period so much. I've loved this recording for a long time.

It always scares me how well some trumpet players can sound while playing so high. I can get those high notes. Kind of... On good days. Well, that's why we live so long, to practice.

Danny45635 I would suggest he was high, but I suspect not. The majesty of Bach, his precision, his humanity, appeals when I am high

what is difficult is to make them clean for Bach music there are two very different sounds researched by trumpet player in uppon register, depending on if you are a band player or a classical player it isn't necessary harder or simpler, but it's a different work. I don't think that Friedemann Immer can play american stuff very loud, he could play the notes with his sound.

I actually really appreciate the fact that's he's not dancing all over the stage like some of the others. I find all that very distracting. Of course, it's a bit difficult to dance when seated, although the cello player doesn't seem to have a problem with it. ;-)

fiddlinmacx to perform this music they have to „dance“ - it‘s part of playing baroque music of this kind correctly - it‘s dance music of that time..the dancing stresses the dynamics, but the trumpet player has to look on his breath.with dancing he would have no chance to play it perfectly, to hit the notes - the group is a total rolemodel how to play that music

Nobody has mentioned the sound equipment and capturin, but this is a remarkable capturin, for that there is no "room" sound, although the mics must be right far from the holes whenceout come the melodies. The tech crew deserves as much recognition. And how do they play in such perfect balance of volume? There's not no conductator is there?
