She plays Bach in a way I’ve never quite heard before. The Inventions are so very fluidly and elegantly pedaled. And, re the above comments speaking of Gould, who used very little pedal in Bach (ditto Angela Hewitt): well, I worship his (and her) take(s) on Bach-who doesn’t?-yet this is diametrically opposed to these approaches and works equally well-and sounds so very different. Gorgeous. Thanks for posting. I am a successful, professional pop musician; but I have put it aside in my late middle age, and have taken up playing classical piano, and am studying counterpoint and classical composition. I’m so grateful to finally understand-and love-Bach. And for musicians like me, to hear a master like Meyer play these “student” pieces is an enormous boon to all who are in my position.

Marcelle Meyer trained with Debussy on how to play her Preludes after meeting him when she made the debut performance of the Satie Parade in 1917. Meyer became Erik Satie's favorite pianist and debuted Francis Poulenc Sonata for four hands with the composer. She debuted several of her other works and recorded with him. In the early 1920s she played for Darius Milhaud and Stravinsky

When I heard her Partita No. 3, I was astonished. It contains all the emotion that Bach would have projected into this often underrated work (something directly related to the character of the piece itself). In most cases, it is something that most pianists, famous or not, foolishly overlook. Her playing is both melancholy and virtuous. She seems to occupy a major place in French Bach playing, along with Yvonne Lefebure.

"Anyone who performs Bach like this will laughed at"... Are you serious? I think you have no idea about current day trends re interpretations of Bach (or Handel or any other Baroque) keyboard works played on the piano. Do you think the reaction at Julliard of a 20 year old plating like this would be castigate him/her or praise them? Of course you miss the main point which is that there are precious few pianists who have played Bach so gorgeously in the last 75 years.

I apologize, my comment was not recorded completely in previous comment. I was stating that Marcelle Meyer had been a great Bach piano interpreter and that this recording was nothing less than historic. Thanks.

I would advise any student of piano to aspire to Meyer’s exquisite interpretation. She is thorough and artistic and not mechanical like many contemporary pianists.

Thank you. She's one of my favorite interpret of Bach. Just lovely... Hm. No, I lie, apart of those tiny bijoux by Lipatti and maybe Sokolov, she is the ultimate, by far the most favorite pianist of mine.

Listening to these pieces played by Glenn Gould, I saw a commentator suggest we listen to these recordings here. I understand WHY now. Seems like Musicality can be different than Virtuosity, although one can be expressing both at the same time. I'm just an amateur listener and not even a player, but learning nonetheless about how the language of music is spoken. Very profound experience! Thank you fellow readers when you have constructive comments like the one bringing me here. Otherwise, save your snobby critiques about players (and even pianos!) for your own cocktail parties :)

Knock out punch. Tried to listen to Glenn Gould play Mozart Son 13 on a sour piano with all his gusto but it fell flat. Marcelle has it all.

Extraordinaire interprétation, l'une des plus esthétiques avec Gould, du moins de mon point de vue. Si Marcelle Meyer est excellente jouant Bach, elle arrive à faire de Rameau l'égal de Bach.

Take it easy, Jean. Some people have problems with sugar, some - just sad... some are heartless.. some are stressed. I remember in comments somewhere the guy was thanking for the music, being in a terminal stage of cancer. And his comments were god damn brilliant. I've texted him six months later; I was sure he passed. And you know what? I was crying when he texted me back, "the chemotherapy gives me 2 months more..."

Never heard of her til now yet glenn gould is a household name in any bach fans home. She's truer to bach in my opinion. She has sensitivity and you can hear the beauty of the piano itself. Gould imposed himself on bach and the piano. And sensitivity was almost completely absent. The monotony of his playing has often driven me to turn him off. Yet he is so celebrated. Bachs music in my opinion should have a sweet charm aswell as a towering monumentality. And no reason for these two qualities to be at odds with eachother.
