A brilliant, an excellent, an OUTSTANDING performance. And yet even with that said, it demonstrates clearly - if you listen closely - the fact that of all the keyboard instruments the clavichord is the most demanding, the most mercilessly unforgiving. Unlike the spinett, the virginal, the harpsichord or the organ (not to mention the piano), the clavichord lays bare EVERY imperfection in technique, be it ever so slight or minuscule or minute or seemingly insignificant. Perhaps that - and the soft, unobtrusive volume level produced by the clavichord - made it the preferred instrument for home keyboard practice up to around 1800.

@@herrickinman9303 Jamming is perfectly fine, a very popular term with all kinds of musicians, including classical. There's nothing remotely wrong or ''low class'' about this expression, It's also much more practical than saying ''improvising with other musicians''. Also, don't treat your ideology as absolute truth.
@herrickinman9303
3 жыл бұрын
@@matteomagurno3068 Wrong. You're misusing the term. By definition, _jamming_ refers to improvisation between 2 or more musicians. This is a statement of fact, not "ideology." @@herrickinman9303 Indeed, but harpsichord can be expressive too. Most pieces by Bach can be played by a robot with prefect time and as flat dynamics as he indicates and still make sense (it won't be a great performance though). I have played this on the piano, which has some expressive possibilities lacking on the harpsichord (though harpsichord is also good), and I am mostly an organist. After hearing this, I think clavichord is best of all, at least for this very important work.

Wait, this is all IMPROVISED? Bach improvising a fantasia? I can see that. Much of his baroque style is here, and the chord progressions are great with a somewhat free structure (which is the definition of fantasia). But a fugue? That's a complicated beast of writing and counterpoint. I knew Bach was a genius, but creating a fugue that's entirely improvised still has me fascinated to a pondering degree. P.S.: Big thanks to Van Delft for playing this masterpiece, and quite perfectly I might add!
