J.S.Bach - Arioso from Cantata BWV 156
In the early 1900s, Leopold Stowkoski created romantic orchestral arrangements of several pieces by J.S. Bach, including a few originally written for the organ. I decided to go all the way and create a hyper-romantic arrangement of the Arioso. In creating the sounds for this piece, I tried to suggest the massive sonorities of some well-known and unique pipe organs, specifically the Wanamaker organ in Philadelphia and the behemoth Midmer-Losh organ in Atlantic City. No other organ sounds like these instruments with their immense string sections. The sounds I programmed in this recording certainly don’t either, but it was the richest sound I could get at the time.
All sounds (including the pedal part) were produced by two Korg 01/Ws. Combined, the two instruments gave me a total of 64 voices, and most of them were used to create several layers and octaves of sound. They were controlled in varying degrees by velocity sensitivity, aftertouch, volume/timbre pedals and foot switches. Unfortunately, this audio is mono - in live performance there was a very wide spatial spread of tone. In addition, the live sound included a much more resonant bass sound, enhanced by a very soft 64’ pitch in a few passages.
The video is a feed from a live projection setup used for the concert - the PIP is very primitive but was nice to have back then.
There is a small edit at 4:08. I temporarily lost my cursor on the bottom keyboard and had to move it around to the desired parameter, which was the volume for the soft choral sound coming in on the last chord. Hence, that Fsus7 lasted way too long, and I cut out about a second of the recording. As always, the music comes first.
Cheers,
Don M
