This is a pajama recording of Bach's Adagio from the first violin Sonata. I am playing here on some wildgut strings made by Stephan Schürch and Florian Kofler of Wild Gut Strings in Switzerland (www.wildgutstr....
These strings are just magic. After trying many many gut strings over the years I have to say these blow me away and take me back to the original voice of stringed instruments. You can read more about why these strings are different here (it seems to be because they are sheep gut rather than beef which has become standard during the 20th century): www.wildgutstr...
They take a little getting used to. The feel is rougher than a nylon string. Almost like the feel of the wound bass strings (which here are still normal nylon wound strings by Hannebach). But the sound is immediately apparent and much more so than any of the gut strings I have tried in the past.
I broke the first string (will need a heavier gauge) so I’m playing here on a top string which is nylon and second and third in wildgut.
This is day three. The second test will be how long they can be used for when playing with nails. So far they are holding up better than other strings have. But a gut string will fray from the nail and become rougher to play. I am using a slightly longer nail here which is helping keep the flesh out the way so the slightly rough texture doesn’t matter as much. But really I’m seeing very little change to the string after the last few days.
The recording is made on a Nagra open reel recorded with a Delphina microphone by Ear Trumpet labs. I have been enjoying this mic again this last week, giving my usual pair of Royer 122 ribbon mics a little break. This mic was designed for ensemble playing on one mic, has excellent feedback rejection on stage and a really open natural presence. It gives me less direct power than the Royers, and more natural air. Mostly I am trying to wean myself off artificial reverb, and I find this is more possible with the Ear Trumpet. The Royers love the air of post production reverb.
This video has no post production at all. The sound in the video was recorded from the line out of the Nagra, passing via the tape heads to the sound card (Babyface by RME).
The tape is recycled quarter inch tape and the guitar is a 2003 Hermann Hauser III which I have played for twenty years.
The arrangement is for guitar tuned to EADf#be with a capo on the third fret. This arrangement is available here: derekgripper.gumroad.com/l/KRAJ
You will find my 2017 recording of the entire Sonata here: newcape.bandca...
