It's interesting to me that they cut out the entire subplot of the split saber making everyone go insane. Makes the whole thing more mystical and mysterious... wonder why?

In the film the book the split saber is more described as pseudo-science and mysticism. It isn't the piece of suicide inducing revelation that these scenes seem to suggest. In the greater context of the film (had the scenes regarding it's existence and origin been maintained) it provides an interesting mystery at the heart of the film and peaks my interest as to what real life things PTA was pulling from in writing those scenes.

Gotta say, I love the film already as is, but the inclusion of these scenes is something I can’t help but feel would do anything but weaken the final cut. Would have loved 3 hours of this movie if it were possible.

in the script he dreams about opening the box and fire coming out while asleep in the office. so if anything it's following in-story dream logic. then again, pta is known to play pretty fast and loose with his scripts as he scouts locations / gets working with actors- so who knows what was intended!!
