Thanks for showing us the variety of fish foods to feed. I had a Betta that had the same problem yours did. After he died I took a break from fishkeeping. Now I am setting up my very first 20 gallon. It will have Harlequin Raboras and Green Kubotai Rasboras. I think a few Amano shrmp and a few Corydora's to help me maintain the tank. It will be heavily planted as well. You may be thinking, lady, that's nothing, but you have to understand a 5 gallon tank is the largest I have ever had. 😁 Gina

I can relate to the Limnophila issue. Limnophila is probably my favorite stem plant, because it is so easy to keep, but it really grows really, really, huge very rapidly. I've had one completely take over a 133L tank before I cut it back. You really have to be on top of it constantly in my experience.

Thanks, Matt! Hope you had a fantastic Holiday. At least those were all "quality problems." No fatalities. I bought some hornwort on Amazon a while back. It came in a bit on the crispy side then it exploded! I ended up taking it out altogether. I learned in landscaping and horticulture that some plants are just bullies! They'll take over and end up killing off more desirable plants in the competition for light. So now the hornwort has been relegated to a tank with just fry where it can't do more damage to my more desirable plants. Anyway . . . always looking forward to your next update. And have a fantastic next Holiday! 🙂

Thank you, baby fish are super adept at sensing movement in the water so once you start poking around they will move out. I always move the plant first and give it a bit of a wiggle. That way any fish residing in it will generally swim off and find a new hiding place.

Shop looked outstanding especially the 8ft which was a pleasure to finally see in person. Credit to you and the staff there. Can you do a video or offer some advise on how to deal with fish waste on a sand substrate in a planted tank? It gets quite unsightly so I'm syphoning it out but should I be leaving it for plants to use? It could also be a flow issue I thought as with more flow it wouldn't get chance to settle. Thanks keep up the vids!

Hey 👋 thank you I had a great holiday! Corner tanks are always a struggle to scape as you are quite limited. They are fairly similar to some cube tank scapes, for instance my XL livebearer scape would fit lovely into a corner tank. Most corner tank scapes that look good always focus on a central style focal point. Think of a volcano or a singular tree root coming down from the top.

I wish I had a plant overgrow problem. At least now my plants are surviving, which is progress. Made a lot of mistakes setting up my first tank, so spending too much time and money trying to fix it. Definitely got the bug though, acquired another two tanks (32 litre and around 60 litre off Facebook marketplace, the larger one was given away free, the smaller one, basically brand new, in box, £40) and I'm determined to get these two right from the start. Had them over a month, but still not set up. Got danio, rainbow shiner, platy, mountain minnow, Cory and snails in a cold water tank. And I have at least a couple of babies now, well chuffed at that. The other two, thinking a fighting fish in the small tank, and either guppy or tetra and raspora in the other. The way light reflects off tetra is stunning, but very tempted by live bearing guppy. Or, get a fourth tank, guppy in one, tetra and raspora in the other 😂😂😂. This is an addictive hobby, lol. Got a feeling there will be a fourth tank......maybe more. If folk are tempted, second hand tanks on marketplace, there's some crackers out there, especially if money is tight, as in my case. Thanks, Matt. You, MD, and keeping fish simple have given me great ideas, and hours of enjoyable videos. Stoking my addiction 😂😂😂

@@FishShopMatt wish I had your job, lol. Getting paid for a hobby, not many people can say that. Wish I was nearer, I'd like to see your shop, but it's a bit of a trek from Edinburgh. One thing I noticed. You and MD grow incredible plants, but I am struggling. I got a lecture on water chemistry from a great guy in my local fishkeepers store (fishkeepers at Melville), Darren explained the difference with our soft Scottish water, compared to English water. I would like to see you do a video on water chemistry, it might help us feel a bit better with our slower plant growth up here, lol. Some suggest better nutrients in the substrate (nutri tabs etc) or adding fertiliser directly into the water on a regular basis. What's your take on this? Or, pop up over the border, see how you get on with different water, if it really makes such a difference. You'll have viewers around the world, there's plenty of folk up here who'd offer you a dram or two, to get your views and advice

It's a tricky question as it depends on filtration, water changes, what plants you have, what fish you choose and so on. All of these things can make an incredible difference to how many fish your tank can safely sustain. For me I would probably be looking at anywhere from 20 to maybe 40 but these would have to be smaller tetras. Remember the less you have the less issues can arise.

Hey Matt. Serious question time - sorry! Can you speak on the selling of wild caught aquarium stock some time please? In the reptile trade, sellers have to inform buyers if the animal was caught from the wild, rather than being captive bred. Why is this not a thing for aquarists? I love the hobby but the practice of wild collecting fish is destroying their native populations and causing problems in the habitats. It's a very destructive trade. Could you tell us how to avoid buying wild caught aquarium fish. Can you talk on how and why you buy in wild caught stock? I don't think many people think about this side of the hobby, but in my opinion, they should.
@andreashessler838

This would make a fantastic video. People should be able to be informed if they are buying wild caught. It's easier in marine where 90%of the fish are taken from the wild.
@FishShopMatt
Жыл бұрын
So I have thought of making a video on this topic several times and have actually filmed some stuff but it never ended up in the video. It's a huge topic and one that is tricky. In short some fish only exist because they were taken for the aquarium trade from the wild and now the river or lake they were from is polluted or dried up because of humans but they are still bred in the aquarium trade. It should definitely be something that is more talked about and I will try and do a video on it soon. The one thing that most people overlook is that having fish caught from the wild actually puts a value on the body of water and the inhabitants in it. Other wise that water only has value for food fish or irrigation or something else which can eventually destroy it and we possibly lose those fish forever. It's a lot more in depth than this but I will certainly revisit the idea.
