Loved the series! Isn’t that the way most restorations go? I’ve restored a few motorcycles and yup same thing, ya think that it’s in not that bad of shape but once you open her up the fun begins. It’s still nice to bring her back to life even if just for that special day.

You should do an episode on TIG sleeving out of proof barrels. I'm sure many others would love to see the process done well.

Scott N for sure. Relatively cheap to sleeve it to 20ga or even .410 although it would be a giant lump of metal to swing and would be wacky balanced it could still be a youth gun since the added weight would soak up recoil. Additionally there are some very fine adhesives in the LocTite family that can be used in lieu of welding as well as silver soldering. Many options but they would all kill the “feel” of the gun unfortunately.

@@john-paulsilke893 I was speaking generally, not about this gun in particular. Would be great to see an old out of proof Boss or Purdey bought cheap at auction brought back to life. I vote a best hammer gun.

Guess the exercise just demonstrates the difference between Romance and Reality, I've loved watching the transition from knacker to demonstrated show gun back to knacker. Good Smithing skills Jon, and I can't wait for the next gun road trip.

I think you did a great job considering what you started with. I'm in the US, so naturally I had to find a Parker or LC Smith to refurbish. I went with an LC Smith because - sidelocks. Barrels had been shortened because of a terrier bulge. I have very little money in it, but it's tight, lively in hand, and makes a great quail and rabbit gun for jump shooting. I have $300 in it plus my sweat equity.lol. Next I did a 120 year old Lefever. Again because of the sidelocks. It has its full length 28 inch barrels. And should work well on doves this fall. Again I have about $300 in it as well. Lastly I did a Baker Batavia Leader 16 gauge. Again with sidelocks for my son. He loves it, and is deadly on clay pigeons with it. It was $150. All of these guns are of course factory built ones, and I have no issues with either of them now. If I find an English double for under $200 here in America, I will definitely pick one up. My pride and joy AYA just doesn't have the "soul" of the 100+ year old guns. But it's a killing machine.

This was a great series and as for the plan not going right......well most plans are only good until you take the first step then it's all about adapting and persevering, just as you did. Thanks for doing this series mate.

I believe the main reason for not spending any more money on a gun of that quality is the gun was a none ejector which drastically reduces its value .

Is it the case in the UK that you don't need to plug the semiautos or pump actions so as to limit in the number of shells it can hold? In much of the US shotguns are limited to a three shot capacity.
@robertstewart1464

I think it's a case that on a shotgun certificate you can have a semi auto limited to 3 shots but if you hold one on a firearms licence you can have them unrestricted

I liked the series thought the gun was quiet nice when finished however most of the time I have found out most rebuilding of a shotgun of old is not a dollars and cents wise good deal I always feel like people don’t realize the amount of time to do the job is worth the money so I do the ones I like and enjoy the work retired now so I will pass them on to the family to sell after I am gone

I'm from Aus where there is plenty of open space to go shooting and it seems like a strange concept to me that you guys are shooting so close to trains and houses, here we have laws where you can't shoot within 500 meters of public infrastructure and houses even on your own land so are there any laws like that within the UK?
@tgsoutdoors
5 жыл бұрын
We do have laws stating that you cannot shoot within 50ft from the centre of a highway, and in consequence case injury, interruption or endangerment. This is obviously very loosely phrased, as who knows what interruption really means in this instance.

There are two ways of looking at this situation : Should you make a purely financial decision and scrap this gun OR should the gun be preserved for posterity. My view is that there will come a time when our descendants will curse us for throwing away and destroying so much . Today's rubbish is tomorrow's treasure . One day , many years in the future this old gun [ and others like it ] will bring joy to some sportsman or collector . Oil her well and put her away for another time .

Can't believe that anyone would have had the balls to ask 30 for that...or fail to offer it as anything but a decorator. Thought guns over there couldn't be sold when out of proof unless firing was impossible.
