Re: the history of UB reanimator, can we talk about how the deck once ran Careful Study? These days they don't, because discarding troll to its swampcycling or Atraxa to Frog is just better. Great monsters like troll (or indeed Grief) dump themselves into the graveyard, they don't need other cards doing it for them. This shifts the power of the reanimate spells. They are _stronger_ these days because they don't necessarily need an Entomb or Careful Study to come online like they once did, and I feel like we're not talking about that enough.

I'm not sure about the consistency of this comment. Your contention is that getting creatures into the graveyard is easier now, but your only example (besides the banned Grief) is Troll. There are other creatures with Cycling {1} and I'm sure even other creatures with free ways to put themselves in the graveyard. Still, the probability of winning the game where you reanimate one of those is much, much lower than the game where you reanimate a creature that doesn't put itself in the graveyard, like Atraxa or Archon. I'm just not sure what your conclusion is. To do the "powerful" thing you still need Entomb or a discard outlet... Your argument would hold up better if Grief was still in the conversation.

Reanimator is the deck which is easiest to sideboard against, a million silver bullets have been printed, one of which literally comes in before the game starts. @overrated727
12 күн бұрын
I know this isn't meant to be a ban debate video, but just tossing this in as some food for thought. In the last four years since the Companion bannings, we've had 7 cards leave the format. Grief, EI, Rag, Dreadhorde, Oko, White Plume, and Astrolabe. I think 4 of those are inarguably gone because they made the wasteland/daze deck too busted, and I'd argue Oko also fits that bill. 5 that have died for Daze's sins. That only leaves 2 cards in 4 years that have had to exit from the "everything else in the entire format" category. I know that Daze is on a lot of people's list of untouchable sacred cows... but, as WotC continue to push the power level of creatures harder and harder, at what point do we bite the bullet and fix the real problem?
@syntaxlost9239
12 күн бұрын
Think the bigger culprits are the power couple: Brainstorm and Ponder. But nobody is going to break those two up because they've collectively decided Legacy should primarily be a blue format. One of them will eventually get the axe though as power continues to creep but who knows when that'll be.
@overrated727
12 күн бұрын
@@syntaxlost9239 I think there's a difference here. Brainstorm and Ponder are in loads of decks, sure, but a ton of those decks are nowhere near ban power level. Similarly to Wasteland. Wasteland exists as a tool in tons of other shells, that are perfectly fine for the format. The same can't be said for Daze. In the last decade, at any given time, there's really only been one Daze deck in the metagame at a time. And it has virtually never been anything but the best deck in the format, usually by a mile. Whether it's this Frog deck, or the Greif deck of the last year, or the UR EI deck before that, or the UR Ragavan deck before that, or the UR Dreadhorde deck before that, or the Grixis Deathrite deck before that, on and on back through the years. The last time I can think of where this hasn't been true is all the way back when Goose and Goyf were the creatures to pair with Daze, and even then, that deck was tier 1.
@syntaxlost9239
12 күн бұрын
@@overrated727 So I wouldn't classify Wasteland in the same category due to its ubiquity: It's a check against silly manabases because the combination of duals and fetches just makes colour access a joke otherwise. Removing Wasteland would be impossible without removing a metric crapton of lands. The issue I have with the blue cantrip power couple is not that I think that they're overtly degenerate, per se, but they exert enormous power very subtly. It's the power you feel when you get into a top deck war with a blue player: there's just so many extra sequences they have available that put them ahead; or when you have them in mate-in-1 but they cantrip into cantrip looking for that one-outer; or they keep that one-lander because they can very likely cantrip their way out of a hand that would've mana-screwed another deck. None of that's inherently degenerate because it's all a very subtle manipulation of the probabilities involved. When talking about Daze, you've just listed a number of iterations of the same two, two and a half decks which were also Brainstorm and Ponder decks. That said, I don't disagree that Daze has problems. It's a very binary card being either a powerful blowout or a dead draw and very seldom anything in between. Which is compounded when you have 8 cantrips that can find them when they're powerful and avoid them when they're dead. I don't think Daze would be nearly as scary without its blue support crew. That's why we either see the top decks either be completely silly in their play patterns to win quickly before cantrips can meaningfully impact the game, or are blue decks with the same 12-16 core spells. I get that they're popular cards and Legacy players identify with their play patterns. But I also think they lie to themselves in how much control these cards exert because they do so very surreptitiously.
@tinyprince
11 күн бұрын
@@syntaxlost9239 Having that control over your draws is the entire reason I play Legacy. I want to play the cards I sideboard in. @@tinyprince Yeah, I fully understand the allure of why people play the cantrips: They do things and give you a stronger sense of agency over the game. I get that. I don't want to the game to be limited to my starting hand and the next 1-5 cards I draw. I know. The velocity of a non-blue deck in Magic is rubbish. Being able to sustainably play more colours (Island+Ponder allows your to better support more colours while having some non-basic hate resilience); dedicate fewer sideboard slots to specific answers; and be able to present a wider set of sideboard solutions (thanks to more diverse colours) feels powerful. > I love powerful cantrips. They reward skill and reduce variance. The reward skill portion is more of an illusion of agency in my opinion. Good skill testing gamplay mechanics usually have a wider ranges in outcomes and demand more intensive practice lest they be actively deleterious to the player. Most of the time, players will be pretty consistent with their cantrip decisions. Actual changes in game outcomes from decisions made playing cantrips are usually more novel. I.e. the presence of cantrips changes more game outcomes than any decision made whilst cantripping. > What's bad is that they are limited to blue.
