I still get a lot of comments on one of my videos talking about making sure you take care of your back while you're in the Marching Arts for the sake of your long-term physical health.
You can watch that video here: bit.ly/2FyyByj
At least back in the day, I know we ignored a lot of pain, discomfort, and possibly even injury simply because we didn't want to miss out on practices, performances, or disappoint the staff.
But as a human being that cares about everyone in the activity, we have to take the health of the performers seriously...both in the present and in the future.
Now, for Marching Percussion, probably the most common issues facing the performers is lower back pain and soreness. This can be caused by putting too much stress on our backs...but could it because our IT Bands are tight?
I have suffered from lower back pain long after my marching days ended and when I brought this up to my trainer while doing exercises, she introduced me to a foam roller and how to stretch out my IT Band.
What were the results?
Instant, pain relief...not even kidding!
Of course, you should check with a doctor or medical professional, but at least for me, when I stretched out my IT Band, it helped to relieve my lower back pain almost immediately.
