I think this is one of the first I've seen with a 223, and in a 300 at that. I don't think I've ever seen a basic 300 in person before. Definitely a lot different experience than my 64 galaxie 4 door 390 auto or my dads 64 galaxie 445 stroker car. Looks fun!

They definitely are not that common anymore. It is very fun! I've been driving it on longer trips and she's been turning 20-25mpg cruising at 65-80mph...I'm definitely a happy camper!

I have a blue 63 300, 2 door, auto with the same engine. I just got it and started messing around with it. I’d love to connect and share some pics back and fourth. Maybe you could help me with my project. Right now the valve train is really loud, current project. Along with brakes, lights, just did the alt swap yesterday with a marine bracket. And I also have a vintage marantz 2265b with some kilpsch fortes. We should connect man. I’m interested in the hub cab decals.

Valve train on these sounds like a typewriter when adjusted correctly. 223s have inherently poor oiling to the top end, so make sure your oil passages are clean and clear of debris or sludge. They Have low pressure lubrication at the rocker shaft. Most 223s are solid lifters with adjusters on them...mine are set at .015" cold lash. They did make a "silent lash" setup that used a peice of spring steel to allow for the lash expansion, but I don't know if it was still being offered in the 63 300s, it may have been an earlier option. Heres a link to the decal kit! graphic-express.com/products/1963-ford-galaxie-fairlane-9-1-2-dog-dish-hub-cap-with-ford-name-decal-kit?variant=31405675905123

@@bobby7987 yea, I kinda desludged mine and cleaned all the oil tubes, the lifter pushrod area, and everything else I could reach. Mine does have the silent lash, which I adjusted (it was way outa whack and likely parked 27 years ago because of this) and now I’m daily driving it. It needs valve seals which I’ve order and have. I’m getting to the point where I don’t know how much I want to put into this engine / trans combo as the 2 speed ford O matic really isn’t good for modern speeds. Even the state hwy I’m getting run over at 62 mph. I’m at a crossroads, engine drive train swap or preserve it for the next person and find another 2 door for my tire burning adventures to come. You get many people wanting to buy your car? I do.

Love your build, just read the full thread on ford six forum, What ignition setup are you running? I have a 59 Edsel with a 223. Clifford intake, autolite 2100 carb, split dual outlet factory ex. manifold, dual 2-1/4 exhaust, and 300 duraspark distributor with GM HEI module. Looking to dial in the timing curve. It drives well in general, but stumbles when you mash on the go pedal under a load. Easing into the throttle and stomping it in neutral everything is fine.

I'm running a Davis Unified Ignition (DUI.) Basically the same setup as yours. Clifford's stuff runs like crap out of the box if all you are doing is bolting it onto a stock motor...especially somewhere above sea level. Have you done any other mods to the engine like I have? Getting the quench, compression, and cam timing right helps these engines a huge amount. I settled recently at about 21° initial and 34° total on 93 octane @ 85-90+°F outside. I found I had to go up two jet sizes and 1 air corrector size on my weber 38s to meet my engines new demands for fuel and air. Originally, my stumble issue was due to way too small of jets on the carbs as clifford supplied them. Order a jet kit (or two if you have twins like me) from Redline and start working your way up and re-tuning your carb(s) I haven't been on the fordsix page in a minute but feel free to PM me your contact info there or on here if you need some help tuning your 223. ***edit*** just read that you are running a single 2bbl 2100.. You need to be aware there are multiple different venturi and jet sized 2100s out there so know which one you have and how many CFM it flows. As much as I love a 2100, I might recommend a 2x2bbl intake or a 3x1 holley before I'd recommend a single 2100 on a 4bbl cliffy intake...you will have pretty poor fuel distribution with a single carb on a long motor and possibly not have enough tunability with the 2100. Getting an AFR gague installed with an 02 sensor can help save you tons of money in headaches and tuning. Off the top of my head, you might try giving the 2100 more accelerator pump squirt for when you tip in. Though if it goes rich, you are probably lacking air from too small of a venturi size.

@@bobby7987 the motor was rebuilt in 2000 with 0.30 over pistons. otherwise, I'm fairly sure my purist father kept it stock internals. the motor sat on a pallet next to the car until I acquired it last year. I'd like to up the compression and do a cam, but cant bring myself to pull the engine and disassemble yet. I did some jetting on the carb, and reading the plugs it looks pretty close to correct. I am planning to convert my spare rocker arms to a higher ratio. I'm fairly happy with the power and torque if I could just get rid of this stumble/hesitation under load. I've messed around with accelerator pump, but think timing might be the key. You've got more initial timing than me for sure.

@@phillipmack9982 I would absolutely at a minimum recommend decking the head some and raising your compression, as it's less work than tearing the block down...although I would definitely recommend fixing the very bad quench distance that ford left these engines with. My engine had 7.9:1 compression after my first build of it (engine builder didn't listen to me and didn't do one of the things I paid for which was zero-decking the block.) Anyway, I had to run a shitload of timing to make it run well with that low compression. Something along the lines of 28° initial and 38° total. Bump your timing till she pings and then back it off a couple degrees. (Obviously don't keep yer foot in the gas when you hear pinging...you wanna gently test for it!) As for the cam, mine is a 265° cam which I think is about max for these big heavy cars unless you are really into revving....as glorious as a 280° would sound. Schneider told me over the phone that in my blower application a 256 or 265 with 112-114° LSA would be ideal. My cam in this engine has a 108° centerline because it's NA and needs the overlap to draw through at higher RPM. I can't help but wonder that a single header and single tailpipe wouldn't make for more efficient scavenging.

@@bobby7987 I haven't measured venturi size, but it is a 1960 292 factory carb. I mounted it with the throttle shaft running length ways with the engine to try for the best distribution possible. I have 2 holley 1904's in a box, in the future I may get a third and run an offy 3x1 setup. I will also be adding a wideband O2 soon. Most of my energy is going into my a/c install right now. It's hot and humid in South Louisiana

Most likely an accelerator pump problem if you have that kind of stumble/hesitation. Various things it can be, bad diaphragm, slop in the linkage, plugged nozzle, etc
