Just for clarity on the Throttle Body situation we had recalled our T/B’s years ago for losing a screw in Mullets engine before a race. Now all Motion Racework T/B’s have welded bolts in them making it impossible to lose a bolt. Steve has the old version, his have not been repaired.

I'm no engineer but I never understood why not make the throttle blade and shaft one piece and off set the blade to the opening of the TB? You'd be able to have a block on each end of the blade with bearings that could be inserted in the cutouts of the TB itself making the blade and shaft stronger and no parts to fall off. Hmm... should probably get this idea patented...

We had a 1/4" washer get sucked into a big $ baja race truck years ago and I heard it hit the intake then bang around in the header. I found the washer without a scratch on it in the collector. We then ran 500 miles without an issue. After the race we tore it down and not a single mark or sign it hit anything. Sometimes you get lucky. Looks like the car is on its way to 4.10's. A driver would say the screw broke. A mechanic would say “the failed boost controller caused the throttle body to see an unusual amount of boost, causing the shaft to break, which caused the screw to fall into the engine”. My job is full of drivers and I’m the only mechanic. Why would I keep trying so much for them if they don’t care to know the actual root cause??

I think you mentioned during the setup vid it was possible to have them open at a set time as well. Maybe that could be handy? Maybe that can be bypassed by the scramble button if you get in a tire spinning battle with Bailey so it doesn't kill the boost if you're about to win.

I have TIG welded throttle plate screws to their shafts. Plug welding the tips of the screws into their holes kept them in forever in an extreme endurance off road racecar... but I never considered trying to retain a screw if the shaft broke. Do you think boost spikes and/or compressor surge against the closes throttle plates caused the shaft failure? (20 psi pushing against a 4 inch throttle plate is ~250 pounds of force.)

I'm sure Motion uses thread locker on the screws already - pretty sure everyone that makes TBs does, no one wants to be the brand that costs thousands in engine damage because a screw backed out(TBF to Motion, Steve's car/engines are at the pretty extreme end of what their TBs are ever going to be attached to lol, may be time for an "HD shaft" option or something though).

As often as you change transmissions you should put a hook on the top and use a small come along hooked to a roof bar directly above the trans to raise and lower it in place from the cockpit. It would really save your bodies and a lot of time to just slide it under the car throw the hook on it and turn the crank to lift it into place. Congrats on the PB/bummer about having to tear the engine apart over a dang TB blade screw! Common problem? Honestly the throttle bodies look pretty Flintstone AND flimsy for feeding zillion dollar engines. There are only two of them. Weld the plates to slightly larger shifts with no holes in them. Or, hello, maybe Steve Morris could or somebody could make a fool proof throttle body that won't cause anyone any grief. How much money is that screw gonna cost? Sorry, but screws in an SMX inlet anywhere? Sell me on the idea. I'd like to complain about this being 2024. You're probably aware of this trick Steve, but me and my father run an outlaw Hemi Altered on methanol and have been for 45yrs. The trick I came up with about 17yrs ago was I made a cheap adapter that that allows me to hook a shop vac to my valve cover where my vac pump pulls from. After a race I do that and it does a great job getting all that moisture out of the motor. Has increased my PennGrade oil usage life by double! After an hour or so the oil is the beautiful green again with zero water in it. Have noticed a few pro mod guys doing the same lately. Old school trick. Keep up the good work!

Great Idea. I used a very similar thing with an industrial hydraulic system that ran inside a hot wash. Used a powered draught through the top of the tank to draw out the steam in addition to a clear bowl fed on the base of the tank that you could see the water that had fallen out to the lowest spot in the tank after it had been shut down and cooled off. Fasten them with the stated fillister head screws, SAFETY wire them And never have them come out again. Airplanes are REQUIRED to safety wire ALL nuts and bolts.
