The Daisetsuzan National Park have the highest mountains in Hokkaido. Most of the back country skiing is at the southern end of the park called Tokachidake, named after the live volcano in the area.
There are a number of different trailheads where the elevation is around 1000 m. Most of the peaks rise to around 2000 m and the tree line is around 1,450 meters.
The alpine area snow conditions can sometimes be firm but you will often find that the tree skiing always offers excellent powder Conditions.
The Trees are mostly old growth spruce which are widely spaced apart. These Spruce are called ‘akaizomatsu’ and can live up to 900 years old.
The Tokachidake area also has some amazing Hot Springs to soak in after a day back country skiing.
